קְבַּר אַבְרָהָם וְשָׂרָה אִשְׁתּוֹ : 11 וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי מוֹת אַבְרָהָם וַיְבָרֶךְ אֱלֹהִים אֶת־יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ וַיֵּשֶׁב יִצְחָק
עם־בְּאֵר לַחַי ראי : שביעי 12 וְאֵלֶה תִּלְדֹת יִשְׁמָעֵאל בֶּן־אַבְרָהָם אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה הָגָר
הַמִּצְרִית שִׁפְחַת שָׂרָה לְאַבְרָהָם : 13 וְאֶלֶה שְׁמוֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׁמָעאל בִּשְׁמתָּם לְתוֹלְדֹתָם בְּכָר יִשְׁמָעֵאל נְבָית
וְקֵדָךְ וְאַרְבְּאֵל וּמַבְשָׂם : 14 וּמִשְׁמָע וְדוּמָה וּמַשָׂא : מפטיה 15 חָרֵד וְתֵימָא יְטוּר נָפִישׁ וֶקְדְמָה: 16 אֵלֶה הֵם בְּנִי
יִשְׁמָעֵאל וְאֶלֶה שְׁמַתָם בְּחַצְרֵיהֶם וּבְטִירֹתָם שְׁנֵים־ עָשָׂר נְשִׂיאָם לְאמֹתָם : 17 וְאֵלֶּה שְׁנֵי חַי יִשְׁמָעֶאל מְאַת שָׁנָה וּשְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה וְשֶׁבַע שָׁנִים וַיִּגְרָע וַיָּמָת ניאָסֶף אֶל־־עַמָּיו :
עמָּיו : 18 וַיִּשְׁכְּנוּ מֵחֲוִילָה עַד־־שוּר אֲשֶׁר עַל־פְּנֵי מִצְרַיִם בְּאֲכָה אֲשֶׁוּרָה עַל־פְּנֵי כָל־
סדר 19 וְאֶלֶה תּוֹלְדֹת יִצְחָק בֶּן־אַבְרָהָם אַבְרָהָם הוֹלִיד אֶת־יִצְחָק :
20 וַיְהִי יִצְחָק בֶּן־אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה בְּקַחְתּוֹ אֶת־רִבְקָה בַּת־בְּתוּאֵל הָאֲרַמִּי מִפַּדַּן אֲרָם אֲחוֹת לָבָן הָאֲרַמִּי לֹוֹ לְאִשָּׁה : 21 וַיִּעְתַּר יִצְחָק לַיהוָה לְנְכַח אִשְׁתּוֹ כִּי עֲקָרָה הִוא וַיְעָתָר לוֹ יְהוָה וַתַּהַר רִבְקָה אִשְׁתּוֹ : 22 וַיִּתְרְצֵצוּ הַבָּנִים בְּקִרְבָּהּ
וַתֹּאמֶר אִם־כֵּן לָמָּה זֶה אָנֹכִי וַתִּלֶךְ לִדְרש אֶת־ גוים ק יְהוָה : 23 וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה לָהּ שְׁנֵי גיים בְּבִטְנֵךְ וּשְׁנֵי
לְאָמִים מְמַעַיִךְ יְפָרֵדוּ וּלְאֹם מִלְאִם יֶאֱמָץ וְרַב יַעֲבָר צֶעֶר ; 24 וַיִּמְלְאוּ יָמֶיהָ לָלֶדֶת וְהִנֵּה תּוֹמֵם בְּבִטְנָה : 25 יצא הָרִאשׁוֹן אַדְמוֹנִי כְּלִוֹ בְּאַדֶּרֶת שֵׂעָר וַיִּקְרְאוּ שְׁמוֹ עֵשָׂו : 26 וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן יָצָא אָחִיוּ וְיָדְוֹ אֹחֶזֶת בעקב עשָׂו וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ יעקב וְיִצְחָק בֶּן־שְׁשִׁים שָׁנָה בְּלֶדֶת

10 The field which Abraham 1 The Sons of Abraham by Keturah. purchased of the sons of Heth;

Sweetly expressive of the power of conjugal felicity, to soften the pangs of filial tenderness, and the regret for the loss of an excellent mother.
# Here Scrip informs us, that Abraham took another wife, named Keturah, but it doth not appear at what period of Abraham's life this was : all we know is, that it was not before the birth of Isaac ; for, how could Abraham say, in chap. xv. verse 3, “Behold to me thou hast given to seed, and lo, one born in niy house is mine heir," if he then had children by Keturah? But the old Patriarch wishing to restore the comfort of domestic society in some sort, therefore marries Keturah, who in all probability, was a concubine, or secondary wife already in the family. The general opinion is, that Keturah was Hagar, and that it was for this reason that Isaac went to Lahai-rui, where she dwelt, in order to bring her back to his father. See Jarchi.
# In order to shew them, that Isaac only was to be his sole heir, and the inheritor of God's blessings to him, as well as the entire possession of the promised land.
59 וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ אֶת־רִבְקָה אֲחֹתָם וְאֶת־מִקְתָּהּ וְאֶת-עֶבֶד אַבְרָהָם וְאֶת־אֲנָשָׁיו: 60 וַיְבָרְכוּ אֶת־רִבְקָה וַיֹּאמְרוּ לָהּ אֲחֹתֵנוּ אַתְּ הֵי לְאַלְפִי רְבָבָה וְיִירָשׁ זַרְעֵךְ אֵת שַׁעַר שְׁנְאֶיו : 61 וַתָּקָם רִבְקָה וְנַעֲרֹתֶיהָ וַתִּרְכַּבְנָה על־הַגְּמַלִּים וַתֵּלַכְנָה אַחרי הָאִישׁ ויקח הָעבֶד אֶת־ רִבְקָה וַיֵּלֶךְ : 62 וְיִצְחָק בָּא מִבּוֹא בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִי
הוּא יוֹשֵׁב בְּאֶרֶץ הַנַּגב: 63 ויצא יִצְחָק לָשׂוּחַ בַּשָּׂדֶה לִפְנָוֹת עֶרֶב וַיִּשָּׂא עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה גְמַלִים בָּאִים : 64 וַתִּשָׂא רִבְקָה אֶת־עֵינֶיהָ וַתִּרֶא אֶת־יִצְחָק וַתִּפּל מֵעַל הַגָּמָל : 65 וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל־הָעֶבֶד מִי-הָאִישׁ הַלָּזֶה הַהלֵךְ בַּשָּׂדֶה לִקְרָאנוּ וַיֹּאמֶר הֶעבֶד הוּא אֲדני וַתִּקְח הַצְעִיף וַתִּתְכַּס : 66 וַיְסַפַּר הָעֶבֶד לְיִצְחָק אֵת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה: 67 וַיְבִאֶהָ יִצְחָק הָאֹהֶלָה
שָׂרָה אִמוֹ וַיִּקְח אֶת־רִבְקָה וַתְּהִי־לוֹ לְאִשָּׁה וַיֶאֱהָבֶהָ כה וַיִּנָּחֵם יִצְחָק אַחֲרֵי אִמּוֹ :
וַיֹּסֶף אַבְרָהָם וַיִּקח אִשֶׁה וּשְׁמָהּ קְטוּרָה : 2 וַתֵּלֶד
אֶת־זִמְרָן וְאֶת־יָקְשָׁן וְאֶת־מְדָן וְאֶת־מִדְיָן וְאֶת־ יִשְׁבָּק וְאֶת־שְׁוּחַ : 3 וְיָקְשָׁן יָלַד אֶת־שְׁבָא וְאֶת־דְּדָן וּבְנֵי דְדָן הָיוּ אֲשׁוּרָם וּלְטוּשָׁם וּלְאִמִּים: 4 וּבְנֵי מִדְיָן עֵיפָה וָעֵפֶר וַחֲנֹךְ וַאֲבִידָע וְאֶלְדָּעֶה כָּל־אֵלֶה בְּנֵי קְטוּרָה : 5 וַיִּתֵּן אַבְרָהָם אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ לְיִצְחָק : 6 וְלִבְנֵי הַפִּילַגְשִׁים אֲשֶׁר לְאַבְרָהָם נָתַן אַבְרָהָם מַתָּנת וַיְשַׁלְחֶם מֵעַל יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ בְּעוֹדֶנוּ חַי קֵדְמָה אֶל־אֶרֶץ קְדֶס: 7 וְאֵלֶּה יְמֵי שְׁנֵי־חַיַּי אַבְרָהָם אֲשֶׁר־חָי מְאַת שָׁנָה וְשִׁבְעִים שָׁנָה וְחָמֵשׁ שָׁנִים: 8 וַיִּגְוַע וַיָּמָת אַבְרָהָם בְּשִׁיבָה טוֹבָה זָקֵן וְשְׂבֵעַ וָאָסֶף אֶל־עַמָּיו : 9
וַיִּקְבְּרוּ אתוֹ יִצְחָק וְיִשְׁמָעֵאל בָּנָיו אֶל־מְעָרַת הַמַכְפַּלֶה אֶל־ שְׂדֵה עֶפְרן בֶּן־צחַר הַחִתִּי אֲשֶׁר עַל־פְּנֵי מַמְרֵא : 10 הַשָּׂדֶה אֲשֶׁר־קָנָה אַבְרָהָם מֵאֵת בְּנֵי־חֵת שָׁמָה

* The noble simplicity, and vein of true piety which runs through the whole of this discourse of Abraham's servant to his master's kindred, is easier to be admired than imitated : and fuily justifies that metaphorical expression of R. Acha " That the common conversation of the servants of the Patriarchs, was more acceptable to God, than the law of their descendants :" i. e. the story of Eliezer being twice recorded in scripture; while many principal parts of the law are to be understood by inference only. See Jarchi.
♡ This was always the method of betruthing the true or primary wife, whereas the concubine, or secondary wife, had no presents, but was only entitled to right of the marriage-bed. This custum of making costly presents, by way of betrothing, was also in use among the Grecians.
