HYMN 183

THE GOODNESS OF GOD..

WEET is the mem'ry of thy grace,
My God, my heav'nly King!
Let age to age thy righteousness
In founds of glory fing.

2 GOD reigns on high, but not confines His goodness to the skies;

Thro' the whole earth his goodness fhines,
And ev'ry want fupplies.

3 With longing eyes thy creatures wait
On thee for daily food;

Thy lib'ral hand provides them meat,
And fills their mouths with good.

4 How kind are thy compaffions, LORD!
How flow thine anger moves!
But foon he fends his pard'ning word,
To chear the foul he loves.

5 Creatures, with all their endless race,
Thy pow'r and praise proclaim:
May we, who taste thy richer grace,
Delight to bless thy name.

HYMN 184.

TRIBULATION.

THE fouls that would to Jesus prefs,
Must fix this firm and fure,
That tribulation, more or less,

They must and shall endure.

2 From this there can be none exempt; 'Tis GOD's own wife decree : Satan the weakest faint will tempt, Nor is the strongest free.

3.

The world opposes from without,
And unbelief within:

We fear, we faint, we grieve, we doubt,

And feel the load of fin...

4 Glad frames too often lift us up,
And then how proud we grow;
Till fad desertion makes us droop,
And down we fink as low.

J

5 Ten thousand baits the foe prepares
To catch the wand'ring heart;
And feldom do we fee the fnares,
Before we feel the smart.

6 But let not all this terrify;
Purfue the narrow path;

Look to the LORD with ftedfaft eye,
And fight with hell by faith.

7 Tho' we are feeble, CHRIST is ftrong, His promifes are true

We fhall be conqu❜rors all ere long,
And more than conquerors too,

HYMN 185.

Hendarkness long has veil'd my mind,
And fmiling day once more appears,
Then, my Redeemer, then I find,
The folly of my doubts and fears.

2 Straight I upbraid my wand'ring heart, And blush that I fhould ever be Soprone to act fo base a part,

And harbour one hard thought of thee.

3 O let me then at length be taught,
What ftill I am fo flow to learn,
That God is love, and changes not,
Nor knows the fhadow of a turn.

4 Sweet truth, and eafy to repeat;
But when my faith is fharply try'd,
I find myself a learner yet,
Unfkilful, weak, and apt to flide.

5 But O! my LORD, one look from thee Subdues the difobedient will,

Drives doubt, and difcontent away,
And thy rebellious worm is ftill.

6 Thou art as willing to forgive, As I am ready to repine;

I

Thou therefore all the praise receive,
Be fhame and felf-abhorrence mine.

HYMN 186.

TRIALS OVER COME BY HOPE.

WH

HEN I can read my title clear
To manfions in the fkies;

I bid farewel to ev'ry fear,
And dry my weeping eyes.

2 Shou'd death against my foul engage,
And hellifh darts be hurl'd;
Then I can smile at Satan's rage,
And face a frowning world.

3 Shou'd cares like a wild deluge come, And ftorms of forrow fall;

May I but fafely reach my home,
My God, my heav'n, my all.

4 There fhall I bathe my weary foul,
In feas of heav'nly reft;
And not a wave of trouble roll
Across my peaceful breast.

HYMN 187.

ZECH. xiii. 1.

HE fountain of CHRIST
Affift me to fing,

The blood of our Prieft,
Our crucify'd King;
Which perfectly cleanfes
From fin and from filth,
And richly dispenses

Salvation and health.

2 This fountain fo dear
He'll freely impart,
Unlock'd by the fpear,
It guth'd from his heart,
With blood and with water,
The first to atone,
To cleanfe us the latter;

The fountain's but one.

3 This fountain from guilt.
Not only makes pure,
And gives, foon as felt,
Infallible cure;

But if guilt removed

Return, and remain,

Its pow'r may be proved
Again and again.
