PREFACE.

373

Ir has been held by many, both of those who defend and those who doubt or deny the Mosaic authorship of Genesis, that in its earlier chapters a compilation was made from two or more documents, one, or one set of which, designated the Deity as Elohim, translated in our common version God, the other as Jehovah, or Jehovah Elohim, translated in our common version Lord, or Lord God. To facilitate private study, the following attempt at an arrangement of the documents in parallel columns was made a year or two since. It is now published under the supposition, that others beside the person for whose use it was printed, might deem it a convenience to read the passages in parallel columns instead of picking out the detached passages and mentally putting them together. The translation is that of the common version, except that the word Jehovah is used where it occurs in the original, which includes the instance in chapter vi. 5, and except also a change in the translation of chapter vi. 3.

In chapter iii. verses 1-5, with one exception, and in iv. 25, v. 29, and ix. 27, the term for the Deity deviates from the column to which it belongs, and these passages are placed in small type that the reader's attention may be directed to them. It is perhaps impossible to make an arrangement free from any objections, though the existence of at least two originally distinct documents can scarcely be doubted. The mention in the first column of forty days, ch. vii. 12, appears to be borrowed from the other column.

The marginal notes may assist the reader in studying the descent of Lamech in the one column from Seth, and in the other from Cain, as also in comparing the columns generally.

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas; and God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

14 And God said, Let there be lights Sun, Moon, in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: 15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, [See 1st column of next page.]

8 And Jehovah God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground made Jehovah God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. 11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. 14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.
