make them confess their former iniquities: make them to feel now the weight of all their sins, that they may not feel it eternally, when past a remedy. Direct and empower thy messengers, O Lord, to speak to the convictions of their minds: enable them to cry aloud, and not spare, and to show thy rebellious creatures their transgressions and their sins. Yea, make thy word in the mouth of thy servants as fire, to inflame and rouse the consciences of such drowsy sinners, that they may come to perceive what a lost condition they are in; and be restless in themselves, till, coming unto Christ, they find rest unto their souls. O thou Almighty God! do marvellous things, worthy of thyself, in taking away that which blinds the minds, and hardens the hearts, of such stupid creatures; and bring them out of the worst lethargy and deadness; that they may understand themselves, and seek after God, and follow the things which make for their peace through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Prayer for all that desire our Prayers.

O LORD GOD of the spirits of all flesh! thy Word requires us to pray for others, as well as for ourselves; and to call upon thee as our common Father in Christ Jesus. And though I am unworthy to address thy heavenly Majesty either for myself or others, yet in the hope of thy mercy and under a sense of my duty, I take upon

me to become a humble petitioner to thee, my Lord, in behalf of all such as desire to be partakers of my prayers. O that all of them might share in thy rich mercies, according to their several wants and necessities! They are known to thee by name; O let them be known of thee in the number of thy children. Thou knowest what they most need and chiefly desire: O thou gracious Giver of all good, answer them in the desires. of their hearts, as far as they desire the things that are right and good. And where they desire what is unfitting and hurtful, convince them of their error that they may not persist in it: and, where they see not the things of their peace, or are indifferent towards that which is most for their good, O Lord, show them the saving way, and grant them an unfeigned love for it, and true zeal to follow it. Bless them, gracious Father, with so much of the world's good, as thou knowest to be good for them: but especially remember them with the favour which thou bearest to thy people. Instruct them, Lord, in the knowledge of thy will; and show them what they must do to be saved. And make them faithful to practise according to the light which thou art pleased to give them: yea, incline their hearts to take pleasure in the performance of their duty. Bless them, O God of all grace, with that favour of thine, in which is life, and with all spiritual blessings in heavenly things in Christ Jesus. Amen.

A Prayer for a Woman in Travail.

O ALMIGHTY LORD GOD, who bringest to the birth and givest strength to bring forth; show favour, we beseech thee, to thy servant, in the time of her need and distress; and be not far from her, when trouble is nigh to her, and lies sore and heavy upon her: but let her experience thy help, at hand, according to the necessity of her case. O mitigate her pangs, and support her under the pain and pressure that are so grievous to be borne. And grant her Lord, a timely, safe, and happy deliverance; and let her see the fruit of her womb, with such comfort and joy, as may make her forget her past anguish, and with a truly thankful heart give glory to thee for all the rich mercies vouchsafed unto her. But if, in thine unsearchable wisdom, thou hast ordained otherwise, and hast decreed that the event should not correspond with the desires which we have presumed to express before thee; if thou hast willed that this expected birth should prove an occasion of thine handmaid's death; O hear us, good Lord (we most earnestly beseech thee), for her precious soul. Let that be safe in thy blessed hands: let it be fitted for its appearance before thy tribunal: and let her experience that best of all deliverances, a deliverance from all sin and misery, into the perfection of holiness, and the fulness of joy; there to live in thy love, and to sing in thy praise for evermore. Amen.

A Prayer for a Sick Child.

O GOD of the spirits of all flesh, the only Giver and Preserver of life: the smallest, as well as the greatest, are thy work, and thy care: though thou art so great, yet thou despisest not any. O dear Lord, let thy thoughts be full of pity and tender mercy to this poor sick child, for whose affliction we are now concerned; and send him that relief and comfort from above which none of us are able to give. Either lighten the load, or increase the strength to bear it; and deal gently and graciously with him, good Lord, beyond what we are worthy to ask at thy hands, even for thy own goodness and mercy sake. Spare him, O Father of mercies, and grant him ease, and release him from his trouble: yea, make haste to deliver him, we beseech thee: and, in submission to thy will, we beg the recovery of his health, and the continuance of his life, that he may do thee service, and bring thee glory, in this present world. But, forasmuch as children are shapen in iniquity, and conceived in sin, and are therefore subject to death (which reigns even over them that have not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression): if thou art pleased, Lord, to take him away thus early, O let it be in mercy and prepare him for thyself; that it may be to him the greatest gain to die: that he may not only be delivered from the miseries and dangers of this world, and of that which is to come, but by the quickest improvement, may be perfected in know

ledge and grace; and be made ripe and ready for heaven and eternal glory. Hear us, O merciful God and Father, through the merits and mediation of thy beloved Son, our compassionate Saviour; who in infinite condescension, embraced and blessed young children; and who ever lives at thy right-hand to intercede for young and old; the only prevailing advocate for us all. And to thy mercy in him, O most gracious God, we commend this afflicted child, beseeching thee to deal well by him, and be good and kind to him; and out of the riches of thy grace, provide for him as thou seest best, in life and death, and for evermore. Amen.

A Prayer for the Melancholy and Dejected.

O MOST good and gracious Lord! thou knowest our frame, and art a God full of compassion, ready at all times to pity and relieve thy servants under all their troubles. Look down, we humbly pray thee, with thy wonted pity, and remember in tender mercy, our disconsolate friend, who is even distracted in suffering thy terrors. Behold, thy wrath lies hard upon him, and all thy waves and billows are gone over him; so that his mind is grievously oppressed, and he is altogether unfitted for the regular and comfortable discharge of his duty. O thou that speakest to the winds and waves, and they obey thee, compose and settle his troubled breast; speak peace to his soul, that it may no longer be so disquieted
