Serm. calling him the Son of Joseph, that might probably be owing to the vulgar Opinion^ according to which Joseph, we know, was his reputed Father, insomuch that St. Luke, t. iii. 21. when he reckons up his Genealogy, fays, he was supposed to be the Son of Joseph. t So that upon the very first View of the Words, the full Meaning of them appears to be this, viz.

;'; That Jesus of Nazareth the Son of Joseph, was the Messiah foretold by Moses and the Prophets. This Proposition therefore I shall undertake to establish j and to make it as clear and as plain to you as possible, I (hall observe the easy and natural Method, viz.

I. I shall first enquire what those Things are, which Moses in the Law, and the Prophets did write concerning the MeJJiah -, and then \' v ;, ':..

II. Secondly, I shall shew how all those 'Things were punctually fulfilled in. Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of Joseph. >'• \'.

g::: ..;a - & will will follow beyond all Contradiction, that s E R M. the Words of Philip in my Text are true, viz. That Jesus of Nazareth, the Son oj Joseph, was the Messiah foretold by Moses and the Prophets.

I. First then I am to enquire what those Things are which Moses in the Law and the Prophets did write concerning the Messiah, i. e. what is written in the Old Testament concerning him; for under Moses and the Prophets all the Books of the Old Testament are comprehended. By Moses (which the Jews always name separately, as being the first and greatest of the Prophets) are to be understood the five Books which he wrote; by the Prophets are included all the rest. Except sometimes the Psalms be added, which then comprehend not only the Psalms, but the Books also of Job and of Solomon, and some others: But these at other Times, when only Moses and the Prophets are mentioned, .are comprehended under the latter.

In the Prosecution of my Discourse, I shall begin with Moses, and first enquire what Predictons the Law or Pentateuch gives us of the Messiah, and then shall proceed to see what is foretold of him in the rest of the Books of the Old Testament) though I shall B 3 not

s E R M, not pretesid to give you ail the Prophecies we meet with'concerning'him/ which would be an endless Taste; but'/only to collect some 6s* the plainest and most useful to direct us in finding out the Mejjiah. And all the Way I shall take Occasion to observe to you how gradually the Notices and Characters of him were given. Insomuch that almost every Time the Promise of him was renewed^ or his coming Foretold, some new Revelation relating to him Was made, which still gave some fresh Light, by which he might be discovered from any false Pretenders to the Character.

The first Revelation of him is as ancient US the Offence of Adam in Paradise," who had no sooner broken the first Covenant \>y tating the forbidden Fruit, and so subjected his whole Posterity to the Power and dominion of the Devil; but God cuts off thfc Hopes the Devil might entertain that his Conquest was compleat, and his Dominion lasting, by assuring him that in Time even the Seed of the Woman, which he had now deceived, should repair the Loss by destroying his Kingdom, Gen.'ni. \ $.1 will put Enmity (faith God) between "thee and the Woman, and between thy Seed and her Seed, he fiall bruise

. thy thy Head, and thoustalt bruise his Heel. This S E R M. imported that one, in Time, should be born of a Woman, who should trample under Foot the Power of Sin now introduced, and of Satan who introduced it. And so the ancient Jews understood it, as appears from the Paraphrase of Jonathan on the Place, which concludes thus: 'They, the Sons or Seed of the Woman, shall have a Remedy, but thou shalt have none: For they flail apply a Medicine to their Heel, in the Days of Messiah their King. But a Promise of a Redeemer in general being here sufficient to allay the Fears of a general Ruin; God does not fee fit to be any further particular, than to promise that Man shall in Time recover his Fall, and that by the Assistance of one born of a Woman, who shall put an end to the Dominion the Serpent had now gain'd by the Deceit and Guile with which he had imposed upon that Sex.

And upon this general Promise the World relied, without knowing who, or from whence the Deliverer should be, for above 2000 Years; till upon the Call of Abraham the Father of the Faithful, God was pleased to reveal to him, that it was in him and his Seed, that he designed all Nations of the Earth Jlmdd be ble//edt Gen. xii. 3.
