ORD Jesus, we believing
In thee, have peace with God;
Eternal life receiving,

As given us through thy blood;
Our curse and condemnation
Thou barest in our stead,
Secure is our salvation

In thee our risen Head.

The Holy Ghost, revealing

Thy work, has made us bless'd;
Thy stripes have given us healing;
Upon thy love we rest.

In thee the Father sees us

Accepted and complete;

Thy blood, from sin which frees us,
For glory makes us meet.

We know that naught can sever
Our souls, O Lord, from thee;
And thus united ever

To all thy saints are we.
We know thy word declaring
The Father's wondrous love,
In which we all are sharing
With thee our Head above.

May we this love be showing
To all thy members here,
For thy sake freely flowing,
Until thou shalt appear;
i Till all the Church, in union,
Around the Father's throne,
/ Shall stand in bless'd communion,
For ever joined in one.

As with joyful steps they sped,
Saviour, to thy lowly bed,

There to bend the knee before
Thee whom heaven and earth adore;
So may we with willing feet
Ever seek the mercy-seat.

As they offered gifts most rare
At thy cradle rude and bare;
So may we with holy joy,
Pure and free from sin's alloy,
All our costliest treasures bring,
Christ, to thee our heavenly King.

s Holy Jesus, every day

Keep us in the narrow way;

i And, when earthly things are pass'd,
Bring our ransomed souls at last,
m Where they need no star to guide,
Where no clouds thy glory hide.
In the heavenly country bright
Need they no created light;
Thou its light, its joy, its crown,
Thou its sun which goes not down;
There for ever may we sing
Hallelujahs to our King.

HEN I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died,

186 WHE

My richest gain I count but loss,

And pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,

Save in the death of Christ my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.

vs See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingléd down;
i Did e'er such love and sorrow meet?

Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
m Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;

Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all.

m Here springs of consolation rise
To cheer the fainting mind;
And thirsty souls receive supplies,
And sweet refreshment find.

Here the Redeemer's welcome voice
Spreads heavenly peace around;
And life and everlasting joys
Attend the blissful sound.

Bless thy little lamb to-night; Through the darkness be thou near me, Watch my sleep till morning light.

All this day thy hand has led me,

And I thank thee for thy care;

Thou hast clothed me, warmed, and fed me,
Listen to my evening prayer.

Let my sins be all forgiven,

Bless the friends I love so well;
Take me, when I die, to heaven,
Happy there with thee to dwell.

WHO like thee, so calm, so bright,
Thou Son of Man, thou Light of Light,
O who like thee, did ever go

So patient, through a world of woe?
O who like thee, so humbly bore
The scorn, the scoffs of men before?
i So meek, so lowly, yet so high,
m So glorious in humility!

s And all thy life's unchanging years,
A man of sorrows and of tears,

The cross, where all our sins were laid,
Upon thy bending shoulders weighed ;
And death, that sets the prisoner free,
vs Was pang and scorn and scoff to thee;
i Yet love through all thy torture glowed,
And mercy with thy life-blood flowed.

m O wondrous Lord, my soul would be

Still more and more conformed to thee,
Would lose the pride, the taint of sin,
That burns these fevered veins within,
And learn of thee, the lowly One,
And like thee, all my journey run,
i Above the world and all its mirth,
d Yet weeping still with weeping earth.

OME, Holy Spirit, come,

[ocr errors]

O hear an infant's prayer;

Stoop down and make my heart thy home,
And shed thy blessing there.

Thy light, thy love impart,
And let it ever be

A holy, humble, happy heart,
A dwelling-place for thee.

Let thy rich grace increase
Through all my early days,
The fruits of righteousness and peace,
To thine eternal praise.

ALM me, my God, and keep me calm,
While these hot breezes blow;

Be like the night-dew's cooling balm
Upon earth's fevered brow.

Calm me, my God, and keep me calm,
Soft resting on thy breast;

Soothe me with holy hymn and psalm,
And bid my spirit rest.

Calm me, my God, and keep me calm;
Let thine outstretched wing
Be like the shade of Elim's palm,
Beside her desert spring.

m Yes, keep me calm, though loud and rude
The sounds my ear that greet;

Calm in the closet's solitude,

Calm in the bustling street.

Calm in the hour of buoyant health,
Calm in my hour of pain,
Calm in my poverty or wealth,

Calm in my loss or gain.

Calm in the sufferance of wrong,

Like him who bore my shame;

Calm 'mid the threatening, taunting throng,

Who hate thy holy name.

Calm when the great world's news with power

My listening spirit stir;

Let not the tidings of the hour

E'er find too fond an ear.

Calm as the ray of sun or star

Which storms assail in vain;

Moving unruffled through earth's war,
The eternal calm to gain.

ESUS, from thy throne on high,
Far above the bright blue sky,
Look on us with loving eye,

Hear us, holy Jesus.
