Little children need not fear

When they know that thou art near;
Thou dost love us, Saviour dear;
Hear us, holy Jesus.

Little hearts may love thee well,
Little lips thy love may tell,
Little hymns thy praises swell;
Hear us, holy Jesus.

Little lives may be divine,
Little deeds of love may shine,
Little ones be wholly thine;
Hear us, holy Jesus.

s Fold us to thy loving breast,
There may we, in happy rest,
Feel that we indeed are bless'd;
Hear us, holy Jesus.

m Be thou with us every day,
In our work and in our play,
When we learn and when we pray;
Hear us, holy Jesus.

When we lie asleep at night,
Ever may thy angels bright
Keep us safe till morning light;
Hear us, holy Jesus.

May our thoughts be undefiled,
May our words be true and mild,
Make us each a holy child;
Hear us, holy Jesus.

s Jesus, Son of God most high,
Who didst in the manger lie,
Who upon the cross didst die;
Hear us, holy Jesus.

m Jesus, from thy heavenly throne,
Watching o'er each little one,
Till our life on earth is done;
Hear us, holy Jesus.

193 "ERE yet the dawn o'erspread the skies,

Behold my Saviour Christ arise;
He chaseth from us sin and night,
And brings us joy and life and light.
/ Hallelujah!

m O stronger thou than death and hell,
Where is the foe thou canst not quell?
What heavy stone thou canst not roll
From off the prisoned, anguished soul?
/ Hallelujah!

m If Jesus lives, can I be sad?

I know he loves me, and am glad;
i Though all the world were dead to me,
Enough, O Christ, if I have thee.

/ Hallelujah!

m He feeds me, comforts and defends,
And when I die his angel sends
To bear me whither he is gone,
For of his own he loseth none.

/ Hallelujah!

m No more to fear or grief I bow,
God and the angels love me now;
The joys prepared for me to-day
Drive fear and mourning far away.

/ Hallelujah!

O Saviour, for this comfort see

The whole world brings her thanks to thee;
And soon we too shall raise above

More sweet and loud the song we love.

Hallelujah!

UR God, our help in ages pass'd,
Our hope for years to come;

Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home:

Under the shadow of thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure ;
Sufficient is thine arm alone,
And our defence is sure.

Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting thou art God,
To endless years the same.

A thousand ages in thy sight

Are like an evening gone;

Short as the watch that ends the night,
Before the rising sun.

vs Time like an ever-rolling stream
Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

Like flowery fields the nations stand
Pleased with the morning light;
The flowers beneath the mower's hand
Lie withering ere 'tis night.

m Our God, our help in ages pass'd,
Our hope for years to come,

Be thou our guard while troubles last,
And our eternal home.

HROUGH the night of doubt and sorrow,
Onward goes the pilgrim band,

Singing songs of expectation,

Marching to the promised land;
And before us, through the darkness,
Gleameth clear the guiding light;
Brother clasps the hand of brother,
Stepping fearless through the night.

One the light of God's own presence,
O'er his ransomed people shed,
Chasing far the gloom and terror,
Brightening all the path we tread;
One the object of our journey,

One the faith which never tires,
One the earnest looking forward,
One the hope our God inspires.

One the strain which lips of thousands
Lift as from the heart of one;
One the conflict, one the peril,
One the march in God begun,
One the gladness of rejoicing
On the resurrection shore,
i With one Father o'er us shining
In his love for evermore.

m Go we onward, pilgrim brothers,
Visit first the cross and grave;

d

S Now the cross its shadow flingeth,
Now the boughs of cypress wave:
i Soon, a shaking as of earthquakes,
Soon, a rending of the tomb,

Soon, a scattering of all shadows,
And an end of toil and gloom.

"A Pilgrim Chant; the last verse represents the procession passing over Calvary to the Holy City."

196TM M My God, how wonderful thou art,

[ocr errors]
[ocr errors]

Thy majesty how bright,

How beautiful thy mercy-seat
In depths of burning light.

How dread are thine eternal years,
O everlasting Lord;

By prostrate spirits day and night
Incessantly adored.

m How beautiful, how beautiful
The sight of thee must be,

Thine endless wisdom, boundless power,
And awful purity.

O how I fear thee, living God,

With deepest, tenderest fears;

And worship thee with trembling hope,
And penitential tears.

m Yet I may love thee too, O Lord,
Almighty as thou art,

For thou hast stooped to ask of me
The love of my poor heart.

O then this worse than worthless heart
In pity deign to take;

And make it love thee, for thyself

And for thy glory's sake.

No earthly father loves like thee,

No mother half so mild
Bears and forbears, as thou hast done,
With me thy sinful child.

/ Father of Jesus, love's Reward,
What rapture will it be,

d Prostrate before thy throne to lie,
And gaze and gaze on thee.
