Every Man that runneth a Race, and striveth for the Maftery, is temperate in all Things; that he may receive the Prize. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible Crown; but we an incorruptible.

z Wo unto you that are full; for ye fhall hunger. a He that loveth Pleafure, fhall be a poor Man: He that loveth. Wine and Oil, fhall not be rich.

b Look not thou úpon the Wine when it is red, when it giveth his Colour in the Cup, when it moveth itfelf aright; at the laft it biteth like a Serpent, and ftingeth like an Adder,

• Wine is a Mocker; ftrong Drink is raging; and whofoever is deceived thereby is not wife.

d Wo unto them that are mighty to drink Wine, and Men of Strength to mingle ftrong Drink; and rife up early in the Morning, that they may follow trong Drink: that continueth until Night, till Wine inflame them; that fay, We will fill ourselves with ftrong Drink; and To-morrow fhall be as this Day, and much more abundant.

eWho hath Wo? Who hath Sorrow? Who bath Contentions? Who hath Babbling? Who hath Wounds without Caufe? Who hath Rednefs of Eyes? They that tarry long at the Wine, they that go to feek mixed Wine..

They that count it Pleasure to riot in the Day-time, fhall receive the Reward of Unrighteoufnels.

2 Be not amongst Wine-bibbers, amongst riotous Eaters of Flefh; and run not with them to the fame Excefs of Riot: For the Drunkard and the Glutton fhall come to Poverty, and Drowfiness fhall clothe a Man with Rags.

He that is a Companion of riotous Men fhameth his Father.

CHASTITY and MODESTY.

This is the Will of God, even your Sanctification, that ye fhould abftain from Fornication, Uncleanness, inordinate Affection, Evil Concupifcence, Chambering, and Wantonnefs; that every one of you should know how to poffefs his Veffel in Sanctification and Honour, not in the Luft of Concupifcence, even as the Gentiles, which know not God. For God hath not called us unto Uncleannefs, but unto Holiness.

* Flee alfo youthful Lufts.

1 Dearly beloved, I beseech you, as Strangers and Pilgrims, abstain from fleshly Lufts, which war against the Soul.

Keep thyfelf pure: For unto the pure all

Things are pure; but unto them that are defiled

nothing is pure, but even their Mind and their . Confcience is defiled.

[blocks in formation]

"Walk not as other Gentiles walk; who being paft feeling, have given themselves over unto Lafciviousness, to work all Uncleannefs with Greedinefs; and whom for this Caufe God hath given up unto vile Affections, to difhonour their own Bodies between themfelves; Men and Women working that which is unfeemly, and against Nature.

None of you fhall approach unto any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their Nakedness; ye thall not commit any of thofe abominable Cuftoms, which were committed by the Nations which the Lord caft out of the Land of Canaan. For whofoever thall commit any of thefe Abominations, even the Souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their People.

P There fhall be no Whore of the Daughters of Ifrael; nor a Sodomite of the Sons of Ifrael.

Flee Fornication: for he that committeth Fornication, finneth against his own Body, Now the Body is not for Fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the Body.

• Know ye not that your Bodies are the Members of Chrift? Shall I then take the Members of Chrift, and make them the Members of an Harlot, God forbid.

s Know ye not that ye are the Temple of God; and that your Body is the Temple of the Holy

[blocks in formation]

Ghoft, which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? If any Man defile the Temple of God, him shall God destroy. For the Temple of God is holy, which Temple ye are.

Keep thee from the evil Woman, from the Flattery of the Tongue of a strange Woman: Luft not after her Beauty in thine Heart, neither let her take thee with her Eyelids. Can a Man take fire in his Bofom, and his Clothes not be burnt?

"Remove thy Way far from a ftrange Woman, and come not nigh the Door of her Houfe; left thou give thine Honour unto others; left Strangers be filled with thy Wealth; and thou mourn at the laft, when thy Flefh and thy Body are confumed, and fay, How have I hated Inftruction, and despised Reproof?

w Let not thine Heart decline to her Ways; for her Houfe is the Way to Hell. Thou goeft after her as an Ox goeth to the Slaughter, till a Dart ftrike through thy Liver; as a Bird hafteth to the Snare, and knoweth not that it is for his Life.

* If mine Heart hath been deceived by a Woman, or if I have laid wait at my Neighbour's Door; this is an heinous Crime; yea, it is an Iniquity to be punished by the Judges, For it is a Fire that confumeth to Deftruction, and would root out all my Increase.

y Whosoever looketh on a Woman to luft after her, hath committed Adultery with her already in his Heart...

▾ To avoid Fornication, let every Man have his own Wife; and let every Woman have her own Husband; for it is better to marry than to burn. And Marriage is honourable in all; but Whoremongers and Adulterers God will judge.

a Let the younger Women marry, bear Children, guide the House, give none Occafion to the Adversary to speak reproachfully.

Let the aged Women likewife be in Behaviour as becometh Holinefs; Teachers of good Things; that they may teach the young Women to be fober, to love their Husbands, to love their Children, to be difcreet, chafte, Keepers at home, good, obedient to their own Hufbands; that the Word of God be not blafphemed.

• Let the Men intreat the younger Women as Sifters, with all Purity..

Fornication and all Uncleannefs, let it not be once named amongst you, as becometh Saints; neither Filthinefs, nor foolifh Talking, nor Jefting, which are not convenient.

Put all filthy Communication out of your Mouth; for it is a Shame even to speak of those Things which are done of fome in fecret.

f The Woman fhall not wear that which pertaineth unto a Man; neither fhall a Man put on a Woman's Garment: For all that do fo are Abomination unto the Lord.
