that there are at least ten qualifications, to be attended to, in each particular muscle: its proper figure; its just magnitude; its fulcrum; its point of action; its collocation with respect to its two ends; the place, the position of the whole muscle; the introduction into it of nerves, arteries, and veins.

How worthy of admiration is the fact, that "whatever motion the joint, by its mechanical construction, is capable of performing, that motion the annexed muscles by their position are capable of producing!"

Feign would I select one instance of muscular organization so striking, that the mind should be immediately sensible of the thought, the care, and the tenderness of the Divine Contriver. Though the following is by no means a solitary instance, yet still it is, without doubt, a satisfactory illustration.

The foot is placed at a considerable angle with the leg. It is therefore obvious, that flexible strings, passing along the interior of the angle, if left to themselves, would, when stretched, start from it. The obvious preventive is to tie them down. And this is actually done: just above the instep is placed a strong ligament, under whioh the tendons pass to the foot, and are thus securely bound down, as a slight glance at the delineation will evince [q].
