voice it would seem to be with a kind of despair, because he finds his powers unequal to making an impression sufficiently deep on his far too apathetic hearers. It is a true cry that these men raise, and from this very institution in Calcutta they could, if they had means and a few men, extend their operations by establishing more branch schools, in which their excellent and able catechists would afford them valuable assistance.

Family Life Letters

HE following extracts from private letters are given with a view to show a little of his home life, and to indicate some of his more personal interests.

In some of these he refers to illnesses which, ever after the severe attack of typhus in Glasgow already mentioned, obliged him from time to time to take rest and relaxation. After marriage, too, his life became naturally a less retired one, and his highlystrung nerves always required rest after the strain of city business or other public engagements.

Several of the letters which follow are addressed to his sister Isabella. She was very delicate, and he made a home for her in his own house in Tavistock Square, which, on her account, needed to be kept very quiet. It was our privilege to have her with us at Heathlands for the last five years of her life. Mr. Matheson only survived her a few months.
