JERUSALEM.-Scripture Notices.

CONCERNING THE EARLY HISTORY AND STATE OF

JERUSALEM.

"AND Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine and he was the priest of the most high (Heb. vii. 2.)-Genesis xiv. 18.

"And in Jerusalem, David reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah. And the king and his men went to Jerusalem. . . (and) David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David . . . So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about . . . And David went on, and grew great; and the Lord God of hosts was with him."-2 Samuel v. 5, &c.

"And David prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched for it a tent . . . and gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the Lord unto his place. . . Thus all Israel brought up the ark with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets.' -1 Chronicles xv. 1, &c.

“And Hezekiah sent to all Israel. . . that they should come to the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, to keep the passover . . . and there assembled at Jerusalem much people to keep the feast... So there was great joy in Jerusalem."-2 Chronicles xxx. 1, &c.

"Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion."-Psalm ii. 6.

"Because of thy temple at Jerusalem shall kings bring presents unto thee."-Psalm lxviii. 29.

"I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord. Our feet shall stand within

thy gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together; whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord... to give thanks unto the name of the Lord... Pray for the peace of Jerusalem— they shall prosper that love thee."-Psalm cxxii. 1, &c.

"They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people, from henceforth even for ever."-Psalm cxxv.

"In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwellingplace in Zion."—Psalm lxxvi. 2.

SCRIPTURE NOTICES AND PROPHECIES OF THE RUIN AND DESOLATION OF JERUSALEM, BOTH DURING THE BABYLONISH CAPTIVITY, AND ALSO MORE FULLY AFTER OUR SAVIOUR'S DEATH.

"Jerusalem is ruined."-Isaiah iii. 8.

"Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire; and all our pleasant things are laid waste."-Isaiah lxiv. 10, 11,

"Then will I cause to cease from. . . the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness; the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride."-Jeremiah vii. 34.

"And I will make this city desolate, and an hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and hiss, because of all the plagues thereof."-Jeremiah xix. 8.

"All that pass by clap their hands at thee: they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call the perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth?"-Lamentations

ii. 15.

"Zion (shall be) ploughed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps.”—Micah iii. 12.

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate."-Matthew xxiii. 37.

"Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled."Luke xxi. 24.

NOTICES OF JERUSALEM IN THE HISTORY OF OUR LORD.

"And... they brought him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord . and, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon . . . and he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus. then took he him in his arms, and blessed God."-Luke ii. 22, &c.

PROPHECIES OF THE RESTORATION OF JERUSALEM.

"Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously."-Isaiah xxiv. 23.

“Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city... shake thyself from the dust; arise and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion."-Isaiah lii. 1, 2.

"Rejoice ye with Jerusalem ... all ye that love her rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her... that ye may... be delighted with the abundance of her glory. For ... I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream."-Isaiah lxvi. 10, 11, &c.

“And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths; for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the law from Jerusalem."-Micah iv. 2.

"Thus saith the Lord, I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the Lord of hosts."-Zechariah i. 16.

"I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem; and Jerusalem shall be called, A city of truth; and the mountain of the Lord of hosts, the holy mountain. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof... Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country; and I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem, aud to pray before the Lord."Zechariah viii. 3, &c.

JERUSALEM A TYPE OF THE HEAVENLY INHERITANCE.

"Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all."- Galatians iv. 26.

"But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem."Hebrews xii. 22, &c.
