Is darkness and diftress my fhare?
Then let me truft thy guardian care;
Enough for me, if love divine,

At length through ev'ry cloud fhall shine.
Yet this my foul defires to know,
Be this my only with below;

"That Chrift is mine!"-This great requeft Grant, bounteous God,-and I am bleft!

39. C. M. COWPER.

Another.

GOD moves in a mysterious way,

His wonders to perform;

He plants his footsteps in the fea,
And rides upon the ftorm.

Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill,

He treasures up his bright defigns,
And works his fov'reign will.

Ye fearful faints, fresh courage take,
fo much dread

The clouds ye

Are big with mercy, and fhall break
In bleflings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But truft him for his grace;
Behind a frowning providence,
He hides a fmiling face.

His purposes will ripen faft,
Unfolding ev'ry hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,

But fweet will be the flow'r.

Blind unbelief is fure to err,
And scan his work in vain;
God is his own interpreter,
And he will make it plain.

Refignation to Providence.

Y Lord knows what I want,

M He fees my helpleffnefs;

And always readier is to grant,
Than I to ask his grace:

My fearful heart he reads,
Secures my foul from harms;
While, underneath, his mercy spreads
Its everlasting arms.

The fictious pow'rs of chance
And fortune, I defy;

My life's minutest circumstance
Is fubject to his eye:

He hears the ravens call,

Nor can his children grieve,
Nor can a worthless sparrow fall,
Without my Father's leave,

O might I doubt no more,
But in his pleasure reft;

Whose wisdom, love, and truth, and pow'r,
Engage to make me blest!

T'accomplish his defign, The creatures all agree; And ev'ry attribute divine Is now at work for me.

The FALL and RECOVERY of MAN.

DECEIV'D by fubtil fnares of hell

Adam our head, our father fell,

When fatan in the ferpent hid,
Propos'd the fruit that God forbid.

Death was the threat'ning, death began
To take poffeffion of the man;
His unborn race receiv'd the wound,
And heavy curfes fmote the ground.

But fatan found a worfe reward;
Thus faith the veng`ance of the Lord,
"Let everlafting hatred be

"Betwixt the woman's Seed and thee.

The woman's Seed fhall be
my Son;
"He shall deftroy what thou hast done;
"Shall break thy head, and only feel
Thy malice raging at his heel."

He fpake; and bid four thousand years
Roll on ;-at length his Son appears;
Angels with joy defcend to earth,
And fing the young Redeemer's birth.

Lo, by the fons of hell he dies:
But as he hung 'twixt earth and fkies,
He gave their prince a fatal blow,
And triumph'd o'er the pow'rs below.

Original and Actual Sin.

ORD, I would spread my fore distress
And guilt before thine eyes:

Againft thy law, against thy grace,
How high my crimes arife!

Shou'dft thou confign my foul to hell,

And cruth my fleth to duft;

Heav'n would approve thy vengeance well,
And earth muft own it juft.

I from the ftock of Adam came,
Unholy and unclean;

All my original is fhame,

And all my nature fin.

Conceiv'd and fhap'd in guilt I drew
Contagion with my breath;
And, as my days advanc'd, I grew
A jufter prey for death.

No works nor righteousness of men
For fin can e'er atone:

The death of Chrift fhall ftill remain
Sufficient and alone.

Then do not from my foul depart,
Nor drive me from thy face;
Create anew my vicious beart,
And fill my mouth with praise,

The firft and fecond Adam.

Our guilt and our disgrace we own'; Great God! we own th' unhappy name, Whence fprung our nature and our shame.

Adam the finner at his fall,

Death, like a conqu'ror, feiz'd us all ;
A thousand new-born babes are dead,
By fatal union to their head.

But whilft our fpirits fill'd with awe,
Behold the terrors of thy law,
We fing the honors of thy grace,
That fent to fave our ruin'd race.

We fing thine everlasting Son,
Who join'd our nature to his own;
Adam the fecond, from the duft
Raifes the ruins of the firft.

By the rebellion of one man
Thro' all his feed the mischief ran;
And by one man's obedience now
Are all his feed made righteous too.

Where fin did reign and death abound,
There have the fons of Adam found
Abounding life; there glorious grace
Reigns thro' the Lord our righteousness.
