that he might be buried in Olney or his beloved Weston : "So glide my life away! and so at last, Beneath the turf that I have often trod." It was decided, however, that he should be interred in East Dereham Church by the side of Mrs. Unwin. Over his remains is a monument erected to his memory by Lady Hesketh, the inscription of which was supplied by Hayley. It runs : "IN MEMORY OF WILLIAM COWPER, ESQ., BORN IN HERTFORDSHIRE, 1731, BURIED IN THIS CHURCH, 1800. Ye, who with warmth the public triumph feel Here, to devotion's bard devoutly just, Pay your fond tribute due to Cowper's dust! Ranks with her dearest sons his favourite name. APPENDIX A.
