Simon, the Canaanite, is related in the Roman Breviary, Oftob. 28. to have fuffered Martyrdom, together with S. Jude, in Perfia; but the Greek Menology teftifies him to have been

11. S. Matthias is agreed on all hands to have fuffer'd Martyrdom, tho' as it is not certainly known where, fo neither after what manner he died. The Greeks fay, he was crucified, Mena. John was caft by Domitian into a Caldron of boiling or flaming Oil, which fhewed his Readiness to die for Chrift, as much as if he had a&tually been put to Death, and was in fome Senfe a greater Testimony to the Truth of the Doctrine, by reafon of the miraculous Delive rance wrought for him out of his exceffive Danger. Besides that, he farther confirm'd his Doctrine by his Banishment to Patmos, which was another fort of Martyrdom; Tertull. de Prafcript. adv. Hæref. c. 36. Euseb. Hift. Eccl. l. 3. c. 18. And accordingly, though he died afterwards a natural Death at Ephesus, Eufebius, nevertheless, gives him the Title of a Martyr, l. 3. c. 31. & l. 5. c. 24. 4. His Adverfaries afferted it; Kai 25 ávúñoπΘ ἡ ἀπαγ[ελία ἐγένετο πρα κ φυλάκων weggeguún, S. Chryfoft. in loc. Stulta infania! fi vigilabas, quare permififti? fi dormiebas, unde fcifti? S. Aug.

Is Chrift rifen from the Dead? Therefore, receive the Holy Sacrament with the fame Affections, as ye would have look'd upon Him crucified.

III. What Neceffity is there of believing this Refurrection of Chrift? 2 Tim. íi. 8.

II. Why are they bleffed who never faw, and yet believe this Truth?

xi. 1.

1. They have a truer Faith, 2 Cor. v.7. Hebr. Quid eft enim fides, nifi credere quod nori vides? Fides ergo eft quod non vides credere, veritas quod credidifti videre, S. Aug. in Evang. Joan. tract. 40.

2. They give more Glory to GOD, Rom. iv. 19, 20. Hac eft enim laus fidei, fi quod creditur non videtur: nam quid magnum etfi id creditur quod videtur, fecundam illam ejufdem Domini fententiam, quando difcipulum arguit, dicens: Quia vidifti me credidifti, beati qui non vident & credunt, S. Aug. in Joan. tract. 79.
