Promote the best interests of my native country. Bless the King, the Queen, and all the Royal Family. May they be examples and patrons of all virtue. Let the throne be always surrounded with men of the soundest judgment and understanding, the 'strictest honour and fidelity. Let authority be rightly exercised by all who possess it, and all the influence of station, rank, and wealth be on the side of religion, integrity and holiness. Reform all our errors, follies and vices; preserve to us undiminished all our civil and religious privileges and advantages; and continue to us the gifts of thy bounty. Give success to the honest endeavours of the ministers of the gospel, and of the teachers in public and private seminaries of learning, to remove ignorance, diffuse knowledge, and inspire a love of truth and goodness. Dispose all to contribute, according to their respective abilities, to the improvement of one another in mind and outward condition.

Compassionate the cases of all afflicted persons; render their sufferings productive of their future benefit; and in thy due time work out deliverance for them. Bestow on my relations,

friends, and benefactors, whatever they may stand in need of to support and comfort them here, and to fit them for eternal life hereafter. Let my enemies, to whom I would return good for evil, receive thy forgiveness; and bring them and me to a happy union in the future abode of peace, harmony, and love.

To thee, the kind guardian of my past days, I now look for protection through the night before me. Grant me unruffled slumbers, and watch over me in the defenceless hours of sleep. Should it please thee to raise me up in the morning capable of discharging the duties. of life, to thee may I gratefully renew the consecration of my restored powers, and in thy service henceforth employ them, that in the morning of the resurrection I may rise to dwell in thy blissful presence with Jesus and his saints for ever.

Amen.

SHORTER PRAYERS

FOR

MORNING AND EVENING.

FOR THE MORNING.

LORD, to whom I owe my life and every comfort of it, I most sincerely pray that I may live always mindful of my dependence upon thee, and the mercies I have received from thee. May I consider that no action, word or thought of mine is unknown to thee; and therefore be at all times careful to think, to speak and to do what is right. As I hope to be eternally happy, may I seriously attend to those duties which must qualify me for being So. Grant that I may keep it always uppermost in my thoughts, that thy favour is only to be obtained by the holiness of my life, and by doing in it all the good in my power. Let it be ever in my heart to do all kind offices, and to promote peace and happiness among

my neighbours. May I be true and faithful to all my engagements; especially to the promises and vows of obedience made to thee. May I be careful to govern my passions-to correct in myself every vicious inclinationto keep my body in temperance and chastity -to be true and honest in all my dealingsand to do to others what I should in their case

expect them to do unto me. Give me health and strength cheerfully to go through the duties of my calling. Bless the labour of my hands, and accept of my honest industry, as a part of the duty I owe to thee, as well as to myself, my relatives and my country. Let no temptations of pleasure or of profit rob me of my honesty and virtue. In thy favour, and the hope of thy eternal mercy, I shall be happy in whatever station of life thou art pleased to place me. Let this hope, founded on the gospel of thy Son, be my comfort, my refuge, and support in all circumstances.

Amen.

FOR THE EVENING.

O LORD, who hast preserved me this day, I bless thee for thus continuing thy care of me, and thy goodness towards me. Grant that I may shew my thankfulness by my sin. cere endeavours to perform thy will in all things. I most humbly beg forgiveness of every sin that I have committed; and it is likewise my most earnest prayer, that I may never so dangerously deceive myself, as to think thou wilt forgive my sins, if I do not forsake them. Let it be my firmest belief that nothing can recommend me to thy favour, if I do not lead an holy and useful life; and that when I allow myself in any kind of guilt, even my prayers will be an abomination to thee. Enable me so to live, as always in thy presence: and since all my actions and thoughts are known to thee, let me neither in deed, or will, be guilty of any thing that can displease thee. Enable me to improve in virtue and goodness; to correct in myself every bad habit, and to resist every vicious inclination. May nothing disturb my rest this night. Vouchsafe
