act at all times upon the true principles of filial piety, gratitude, and love.

O Lord my God! vouchsafe to hear my prayers to accept my praises-and to bless, prosper, and sanctify to me the duty I have now endeavoured to discharge. Pass by the imperfections and deficiencies which cannot but be visible to thy penetrating eye; and as my years shall by thy mercy be protracted upon the earth, may I be enabled to approach nearer and nearer to that standard of excellence which Thou hast appointed in the gospel of Jesus Christ the Saviour of the world.

And now with all possible reverence, homage, and humility, I would devoutly and gratefully ascribe unto Thee all power, glory, blessing, and praise, henceforth and for evermore.-Amen.

TWENTY-SECOND ADDRESS.

I

O LORD! almighty and eternal God! while creatures change Thou art the same; while our days are passing away, thy years suffer no diminution; but Thou livest and reignest unchangeable and immortal. pray that myself and all my fellow-creatures may be brought to attend to those lessons which thy attributes and excellencies should teach us, so that every day may find us advanced in our preparation for that glorious season of peace, happiness, and joy for which Thou hast designed us.

Grant that I may become more and more disposed to enter seriously into my own heart to institute a solemn scrutiny into my life and conduct-and to discern distinctly the use and advantage I have made of the privileges I have enjoyed, and the occasions afforded me to serve and obey Thee my God! May my self-examination be directed to discover whether I have uniformly endeavoured to do good to all around me from a principle of one

dience to Thee, and a sense of their being my brethren, thy children, and the objects of thy gracious notice and regard.

O most merciful God! I pray Thee to forgive whatever I may have done amiss. through surprise, inadvertency, and inattention. Give me wisdom to be more upon my guard for the future. Incline me to a hearty and unfeigned condemnation of myself for every transgression of thy holy laws; and grant that from a just discontent with myself, and the reproaches of my own conscience, I may detect my sin and make a firm resolution to avoid it for the time to come.

Upon these terms I humbly trust that I may rely upon thy pardouing mercy, of which Thou hast given mankind the strongest assurances in the gospel of thy well-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And for ever may my soul bless and praise, magnify and adore thy sacred and divine moj sty for this display of thy infinite godsdiess and love to thy creatures. The tongaes of the most exalted beings cannot sufficiently exici Tace for this instance of thy be evolence, nor utter the pases winch are most justly due unto Thee,

I would meekly commend myself to the guidance and direction of thy enlightening spirit, beseeching Thee to preserve me from the numerous snares by which I am every where surrounded. O let not any of the fascinating allurements of this world have power to draw me aside for a moment from that fidelity of attachment which I owe to Thee. Disarm prosperity of its influence to render me unmindful of my duty to Thee, or indisposed to cherish the gratitude which should ever glow in my breast.

May adversity be equally ineffectual to alienate my heart from Thee, or to create in me the slightest suspicion that thy wisdom and goodness are not infinite and unalterable. Wean me from every propensity to complain or murmur at thy dispensations; and let me receive the sweetest consolation from the assurance that thy tender mercies are over all thy works, and that no real evil shall overtake those who live an upright and a holy life.

Accept my devout intercession for all my brethren of mankind. I beseech The e to put a stop to the progress of despotism, bigotry, and superstition; and may truth and virtue, which have been too long

neglected and despised upon earth, become completely victorious over error and vice. Grant au abundant share of wisdom and courage to all the friends of virtue and truth; may they fearlessly avow the convictions of their own minds, and use the most eligible means to recommend the practice of everything that is excellent and good to their fellow-creatures.

Have compassion upon all those who are suffering under sickness, pain, and sorrow of any kind. May they receive from Thee, under their several trials, all the assistance and support of which they stand in need. Soothe them in their distress-give them an humble trust and affiance in Thee-fortify their minds with patience under all their sufferings-and grant them deliverance as soon as patience has had its full and perfect effect.

May thy blessing accompany the right discharge of all relative duties amongst thy creatures. Grant that parents may conscientiously full the obligations they are under towards their children; affectionately exhorting them for their present and eternal good, providing for them the best education in their power, and seconding
