every instance in which I have either neglected or misimproved thy grace and goodness under the gospel dispensation, and in whatever respects I have transgressed any of thy wise and righteous commandments. 1 condemn myself for every act of ingratitude and disobedience of which I have been guilty, and pray that for the time to come I may faithfully endeavour to correct my temper, and reform my life, in all cases in which I have acted unworthily of my character as a christian, and unsuitably to the invaluable advantages by which I am distinguished.

Grant me wisdom to make it from henceforth my constant desire and endeavour to know and to do thy holy and righteous will in all things. May I habitually regard Thee as ever present with me; and lift up my heart to Thee with feelings of the lowest abasement and the profoundest veneration. From the contemplation of thy works and the study of the holy scriptures, may I daily increase in the knowledge and love of Thee, my God! May I attain to more worthy, pure, and perfect conceptions of thy divine nature and providence-pay a constant attention to the

rules of thy moral government, and so approve myself in thy sight that I may enjoy thy favour here and be qualified for the everlasting enjoyment of it in another and better world.

Dispose me to make it my constant care to keep my heart with all diligence-to watch over all my thoughts, as well as my words and actions-to cultivate truth and sincerity in the inmost recesses of my mind, as well as in my outward conduct and behaviour to cherish a meek and quiet spirit, and preserve myself holy, harmless, undefiled, and separate from sin and sinners. May I endeavour by such means to imitate my blessed Lord and Saviour, who went about doing good, and devoted himself wholly and unreservedly to a life of piety and benevolence.

O that the same mind may be in me as was in him: and that after having proved myself his true and faithful follower here on earth, I may at length be owned as his disciple in those happy regions where sin and sorrow never enter, but all is love, harmony, and happiness, peace and joy for evermore.

My humble intercession I would offer unto Thee in behalf of all my brethren of mankind. May true religion, as it was taught by my great master, and exemplified in his life and character, be continually extending its influence in every part of the world. Let all tyranny and persecution come to an end, and idolatry, ignorance and superstition, give way to the benign influence of truth and knowledge, peace and liberty; that all the nations whom Thou hast made may come to worship and obey Thee the one only everliving and true God without controul or restraint; and love and esteem each other as brethren of the same common father.

May those in whose hands power is entrusted for the benefit of others be scrupulously careful to exercise it for that purpose. May justice be everywhere administered without partiality or respect of persons. May it be easy for the injured to obtain redress for the wrongs they may sustain, and may this facility dispose them to lay aside every thought of retaliation and resentment.

Give efficacy to the words of those who counsel and exhort in thy name, and as the

peo

ambassadors of Jesus Christ. May they be able to speak to the hearts of their ple, and make the impression upon them which an anxious desire to serve them in the most essential manner prompts them to attempt. May the best understanding everywhere subsist between the teacher and those who stand in need of instruction. May they mutually concur to render each other's labours agreeable and efficacious.

Extend thy merciful regards to all those who are in distress of any kind. Alleviate their sufferings-soften their sorrowsassuage their pains-and sanctify thy dispensations to them. Give them patience to bear and wisdom to convert their present sufferings to their future and everlasting good.

Excite in the breasts of such as enjoy the great blessing of health, a tender sympathy for their afflicted brethren, and incline them to exert their best endeavours for their amendment and recovery

To Thee, O Lord! I now commit myself, and all in whose welfare I am interested. Dispose them and me truly to love and faithfully to obey Thee through the whole of future life; and, in the last

and closing periods of it, may we enjoy cheerful reflections on thy benignity and goodness, and on the use and improvement we have made of the talents confided to us, and the blessings by which we have been distinguished.

And now unto Thee the Omnipotent Sovereign of universal nature-the one uncreated self-existing and eternal God! may there be ascribed by all thy creatures, in all places of thy dominion, glory and honour, praise, thanksgiving, and blessing, for evermore. Amen.
