HYMN XCIV.

I know whom I have believed. 2 Tim. i. 12.

WHEN I can read my title clear
To mansions in the skies,

I bid farewell to ev'ry fear,

And wipe my weeping eyes.

Should foes against my soul engage,
And fiery darts be hurl'd;
Then I can smile at Satan's rage
And face a frowning world.

Let cares like a wild deluge come,
And storms of sorrow fall;

May I but safely reach my home,

My God!

my heav'n! my

all!

There, anchor'd safe, my weary soul

Shall find eternal rest;

Nor storms shall beat, nor billows roll, Across my peaceful breast.

HYMN XCV.

Let us therefore fear. Heb. iv. 1.

WHEN Israel, by divine command,
The pathless desert trod;
They found, through all that dreary land,
A sure resource in God-

A cloudy pillar mark'd their road,
And screen'd them from the heat;
From rocks of stone the water flow'd,
And manna was their meat.

Like them, we have a rest in view,
Secure from adverse pow'rs;
Like them, we pass a desert too,
But Israel's God is ours.

O! may we not, like them, abuse
The riches of his grace;

Nor such amazing love refuse,
But humbly seek his face.

PSALM XCVI.

Lift up your heads O ye gates. Ps. xxiv. 7. Old Version.

YE gates and everlasting doors,

Lift up your heads on high;

[ocr errors]

Then shall the King of glorious state,
Come in triumphantly.

Who is the King of glorious state?
The great and mighty Lord;
The mighty Lord in battle strong,
And trial of the sword.

Ye gates and everlasting doors,
Lift up your heads on high;
Then shall the King of glorious state,
Come in triumphantly.

Who is the King of glorious state?
The Lord of Hosts it is;

The kingdom and the royalty
For evermore are his.

HYMN XCVII.

He hath comforted his people. Is. xlix. 13.

YOUR harps, ye trembling saints,
Down from the willows take;
Loud to the praise of love divine,
Bid ev'ry string awake.

Though in a foreign land,

We are not far from home; And nearer to our house above, We ev'ry moment come.

Tarry his leisure then,

Wait his appointed hour;

Wait till the Saviour of your souls, Reveal his love with pow'r.

Blest is the man, O God!

That stays himself on thee:

Who waits for thy salvation, Lord! Shall thy salvation see.

INDEX.

Abba, Father, while we sing
According to thy gracious word..

A house we have not made with hands
Afflicted soul, to Christ draw near...
Alas! and did my Saviour bleed?
All hail the Great Immanuel's name!
And now my soul, another year
Angels roll the rock away

Another fleeting day is gone

....

Approach my soul the mercy seat
As when the weary trav'ller gains
Awake, and sing the song

.......

Before Jehovah's awful throne

Beset with snares on ev'ry hand

[blocks in formation]

Brightest and best of the sons of the morning.... 21

Come, Holy Ghost! our souls inspire

Creator Spirit, by whose aid

.....

Come, let us join our cheerful songs

Come thou long expected Jesus

[blocks in formation]

.....

22

[blocks in formation]
[blocks in formation]

.......

31

Day of judgment, day of wonders

Eternity is just at hand

Ere another sabbath's close

Father of heav'n! whose love profound

From all that dwell below the skies
