HYMN V.

In due time Christ died for the ungodly. Rom. v. 6.

ALAS! and did my Saviour bleed?
And did my Sov'reign die?

Did he devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

Was it for sins that I had done
He groan'd upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree.

Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut his glories in,
When God, the mighty Maker, died
For man, the creature's, sin.

So be my boastings silenc'd too,
And humbled be my pride;

When faith holds out before my view,
The Saviour crucified.

HYMN VI.

He is Lord of lords and King of kings. Rev. xvii. 14.

ALL hail the

great Emmanuel's name !

Ye angels, prostrate fall:

Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown him Lord of all.

Ye saints redeem'd of Adam's race,

Ye ransom'd from the fall

;

Hail him who saves you by his grace,
And crown him Lord of all.

Ye realms of ev'ry tongue and name,
Ye nations great and small;
Your mighty Saviour's praise proclaim,
And crown him Lord of all.

Oh! that with yonder glorious throng,
We at his feet might fall!

Join in the everlasting song,

And crown him Lord of all!

HYMN VII.

But this I say, brethren, the time is short. 1 Cor. vii. 29.

AND now my soul, another year
Of thy short life is past;

I cannot long continue here,

[blocks in formation]

Much of my dubious life is gone,
Nor will return again;
And swift my passing moments run
The few that yet remain.

Awake my soul, with utmost care

Thy true condition learn;

What are thy hopes? how sure, how fair?
And what thy great concern?

Now a new scene of time begins,
Set out afresh for heaven;

Seek pardon for thy former sins,
In Christ so freely given.

HYMN VIII.

The Lord is risen indeed. Luke xxiv. 34.

ANGELS, roll the rock away;
Death, yield up thy mighty prey;
See, he rises from the tomb,
Glowing with immortal bloom!

'Tis the Saviour! angels raise
Your eternal songs of praise;
Let the earth's remotest bound
Hear the joy-inspiring sound.

Heav'n unfolds its portals wide:
Glorious Conqu'ror! through them ride:
King of Glory! mount thy throne:
Boundless empire is thine own.

Praise him, all ye heav'nly choirs ;
Praise, and sweep your golden lyres:
Praise him in the noblest songs,
From ten thousand thousand tongues.
Easter.

HYMN IX.

Our days on the earth are as a shadow. 1 Chron. xxix. 15.

ANOTHER fleeting day is gone;

Slow o'er the west the shadows rise; Swift the soft-stealing hours have flown, And night's dark mantle veils the skies.

Another fleeting day is gone

To tell thy secrets, O my soul! Faithful before th'eternal throne Thy slightest folly 'twill enrol.

Another fleeting day is gone,
And soon a fairer day shall rise:
A day, whose never-setting sun

Shall pour his light o'er cloudless skies.

Another fleeting day is gone:

In solemn silence rest my soul:
Bend, bend before his awful throne

Who bids the morn and ev'ning roll.
