HYMN XXIX.

God is our hope and strength. Psalm xlvi. 1.
GOD is our refuge in distress,

A present help when dangers press;
In him undaunted we'll confide,
Tho' earth were from her centre toss'd,
And mountains in the ocean lost,

Torn piecemeal by the roaring tide.

A gentler stream with gladness still
The city of our Lord shall fill;

The royal seat of God most high.
God dwells in Sion, whose fair tow'rs
Shall mock th'assaults of earthly pow'rs,
While his Almighty aid is nigh.

Submit to God's all-gracious sway;
For him the heathen shall obey,

And earth her Sov'reign Lord confess:
The God of Hosts conducts our arms,
Our tow'r of refuge in alarms,

As to our fathers in distress.

HYMN XXX.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for. Heb. xi. 1.

GIVE me the wings of faith, to rise
Within the veil, and see

The saints above, how great their joys,
How bright their glories be.

Once they were mourning here below,
And wet their couch with tears;
They wrestled hard, as we do now,
With sins, and doubts, and fears.

They mark'd the way our Saviour trod,
His spirit fill'd their breast;
And, following their incarnate God,
They reach'd the promis'd rest.

Our glorious Leader we will praise,
For his own pattern giv❜n;
And, with the cloud of witnesses,
We'll walk the path to heav'n.

HYMN XXXI.

Confessed that they were strangers.

Heb. xi. 13.

GUIDE us, O thou great Jehovah !
Pilgrims through this barren land;
We are weak, but thou art mighty;

Hold us with thy pow'rful hand.
Bread of heaven, feed us till we want no more.

Open thou the living fountain,

Whence the healing waters flow;

Let the fiery clouded pillar

Lead us all our journey through.

Strong Deliv'rer! be thou still our strength and shield.

When we tread the verge of Jordan,

Bid our anxious fears subside;

Bear us through the swelling torrent;
Land us safe on Canaan's side.

Songs of praises we will ever give to thee.

HYMN XXXII.

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me. Is. lxi. 1.

HARK! the glad sound, the Saviour comes,
The Saviour promis'd long;
Let ev'ry heart prepare a throne,
And ev'ry voice a song.

He comes, the pris'ners to release,
In Satan's bondage held;
The gates of brass before him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

He comes, to bind the broken heart,
To make the wounded whole;
To preach glad tidings to the meek,
And bless the humble soul.

Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim;

And heav'ns eternal arches ring
With thy beloved name.

HYMN XXXIII.

Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the hea

venly host.

HARK! the herald angels sing,

Glory to the new-born King:
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconcil'd.

Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumphs of the skies;
With th'angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

Luke ii. 13.

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace;
Hail the Sun of Righteousness;

Light and life to all he brings,

Ris'n with healing on his wings.

Mild he lays his glory by,

Born, that man no more may die;
Born to save the sons of earth;
Born, to give them second birth.
