HYMN XXXIV.

Glory to God in the highest. Luke ii. 14.

HARK! what mean those holy voices, Sweetly sounding thro' the skies? Lo! the angelic host rejoices; Heav'nly hallelujahs rise.

Listen to the wond'rous story

Which they chaunt in hymns of joy;

Glory in the highest, glory,

Glory be to God most high!

Peace on earth, good will from heaven,
Reaching far as man is found;
Souls redeem'd and sins forgiven,
Loud our golden harps shall sound.

Christ is born, the great Anointed,
Heaven and earth his praises sing:
O receive whom God appointed
For your Prophet, Priest, and King.

HYMN XXXV.

Christ died for our sins. 1. Cor. xv. 3.

HE dies! the friend of sinners dies!
Lo! Salem's daughters weep around;
A solemn darkness veils the skies;
A sudden trembling shakes the ground.

Come sinners, trace in sad review

His grief who bow'd beneath your load; He gave his anguish'd life for you,

Pour'd forth in streams of richest blood.

Yet see, the Lord forsakes the tomb;
In vain his foes forbid his rise;
Angelic legions guard him home,
And shout his welcome to the skies.

Cease, cease your tears ye saints, and tell
How high your great Deliv'rer reigns:
Sing how he spoil'd the hosts of hell,
And led the captive death in chains.

HYMN XXXVI.

I heard a voice from heaven saying blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.

Rev. xiv. 13.

HEAR What the voice from heav'n proclaims

For all the pious dead;

Sweet is the savour of their names,
And soft their sleeping bed.

They die in Jesus, and are blest;
His love dispels their gloom:
How calm and peaceful is their rest
Within their hallowed tomb!

Dark doubts no more their minds perplex,
Nor fears their spirits drown;
Temptations now no longer vex;
The foe is overthrown.

Far from this world of toil and strife

They're present with the Lord;

The labours of their mortal life

End in a large reward.

HYMN XXXVII.

"Made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the Saints in light."

HEAV'N is a place of rest from sin,

But, all who hope to enter there, Must here that holy course begin

Col. i. 12.

Which shall their souls for rest prepare.

Clean hearts, O God! in us create;
Right spirits, Lord! in us renew;
Commence we now that higher state;
Now do thy will as angels do.

The church of Christ, the means of grace,
The spirit teaching thro' the word;

In those, our Saviour's steps we trace,
By this, his heav'nly voice is heard.

Firm in his footsteps may we tread,
Learn ev'ry lesson of his love;

And be from grace to glory led,

From heav'n below to heav'n above.

HYMN XXXVIII.

He shall feed his flock. Is. xl. 11.

His flock the shepherd loves,

He guards them with his eye; He suffers not his tender lambs Thro' his neglect to die.

Beside the mountain stream,

Or thro' the verdant mead,

The shepherd leads his fleecy charge, And watches while they feed.

Thus we desire to lead

These children, Lord, to thee; That, fed upon thy saving word, Thine they may ever be.

Deign our attempt to own;

Bless the instruction given;

Water the seed that here is sown,
And ripen it for heaven.
