HYMN XXXIX.

Hosanna to the Son of David. Mat. xxi. 9.

Hosanna to the living Lord, Hosanna to th' Incarnate Word; To Christ, Creator, Saviour, King, Let earth and heav'n hosanna sing. Hosanna, Lord! hosanna in the highest!

O Saviour! with protecting care
Abide in this thy house of pray'r;
Assembled in thy sacred name,

We here thy parting promise claim. Hosanna, Lord! hosanna in the highest!

But, chiefest in our cleansed breast,
Bid thy eternal spirit rest;

And make our secret soul to be
A temple pure and worthy thee.
Hosanna, Lord! hosanna in the highest!

So, in the last and dreadful day, When earth and heav'n shall melt away, Thy flock, redeem'd from sinful stain, Shall swell the sound of praise again. Hosanna, Lord! hosanna in the highest!

HYMN XL.

How beautiful upon the mountains. Is. lii. 7.

How beauteous are their feet

Who stand on Zion's hill;

Who bring salvation on their tongues,

And words of peace reveal.

How blessed are our ears

That hear the joyful sound, Which kings and prophets longed for,

And sought, but never found.

How blessed are our eyes

That see this heav'nly light;

Prophets and kings desir'd it long,
But died without the sight.

Make bare, O Lord! thine arm,
Thro' all this earth abroad:

Let ev'ry nation now behold

Their Saviour and their God.

HYMN XLI.

Thy name is as ointment. Cant. i. 3.

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds

In a believer's ear;

It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, And drives away his fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;

'Tis manna to the hungry soul,

[blocks in formation]

Dear name! the rock on which I build,
My shield and hiding place,
My never-failing treasury, fill'd

With richest stores of grace.

Jesus, my Saviour, Shepherd, Friend,
My Prophet, Priest, and King!

My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End!
Accept the praise I bring.

HYMN XLII.

He shall enter into peace. Is. lvii. 2.

How sweet the hour of closing day,
When all is peaceful and serene,
And the broad sun's retiring ray
Sheds a mild lustre o'er the scene.

Such is the Christian's parting hour,
So peacefully he sinks to rest;
And faith, rekindling all its pow'r,
Lights up the languor of his breast.

A beam from heav'n is sent, to cheer
The pilgrim on his gloomy road;
And angels are attending near

To bear him to their bright abode.

Who would not wish to die like those,

Whom God's own spirit deigns to bless!

To sink into that soft

repose,

Then wake to perfect happiness!

HYMN XLIII.

I know my Redeemer liveth. Job xix. 25.

I KNOW that

my Redeemer lives:

Oh! the sweet joy this knowledge gives .
He rose triumphant from the grave,
And lives eternally to save.

He lives to bless me with his love;
He lives to plead for me above;
To comfort me whene'er I faint,
And soothe my heaviest complaint.

He lives, that he may in me dwell,
And save me from the pow'rs of hell;
He lives, my mansion to prepare,
And he will bring me safely there.

He lives, my kind my constant Friend,
Who loves his own unto the end:
He lives, and while he lives, I'll sing
Thanks to my Prophet, Priest, and King.
