PSALM LIV.

The Lord is my shepherd. Ps. xxiii. 1. Old Version.

My shepherd is the living Lord,
Nothing therefore I need ;

In pastures fair, near pleasant streams,
He setteth me to feed.

He shall convert and glad my soul,
And bring my mind in frame;
To walk in paths of righteousness,
For his most holy name.

Yea, though I walk in vale of death,
Yet will I fear no ill;

Thy rod and staff do comfort me,
And thou art with me still.

Through all my life, thy favour is

So frankly shew'd to me;

That in thy house for evermore,
My dwelling place shall be.

HYMN LV.

They are new every morning. Lam. iii. 23.

My God! how endless is thy love!
Thy gifts are ev'ry ev'ning new ;
And morning mercies from above,
Gently distil like early dew.

Thou spread'st the curtains of the night, Great Guardian of my sleeping hours! Thy sov'reign word restores the light, And quickens all my drowsy pow'rs.

I yield my pow'rs to thy command,
To thee I consecrate my days;
Perpetual blessings from thy hand
Demand perpetual songs of praise.

O! may thy grace to me be giv❜n,
To hear thy word with docile heart;
To run this day the road to heav'n,

To choose and keep the better part.

HYMN LVI.

Effectual fervent prayer. Jas. v. 16.

Now may fervent pray'r arise,

Wing'd with faith, and pierce the skies; Fervent pray'r shall bring us down,

Gracious answers from the throne.

Saviour! let thy pow'r be felt,
Teach the stony heart to melt;
Clothe the word with pow'r divine,
Make us willing to be thine.

Let the minds of all our youth,
Feel the force of sacred truth;
While the gospel call they hear,
May they learn to love and fear.

Bless us all both old and young:
Call forth praise from ev'ry tongue;
Let the whole assembly prove,

Thine Almighty pow'r and love.

HYMN LVII.

The people that walked in darkness. Is. ix. 2.

O'er the gloomy hills of darkness
Rising beams of light I trace;
Gaze my soul! the prospect brightens
With a wondrous day of grace.
Blessed jubilee!

Let thy glorious morning dawn.
Let the Indian, let the Negro,
Let the rude Barbarian, see
That divine and glorious conquest
Once obtain'd on Calvary.
Let the gospel

Loud resound from pole to pole. May the realms that sit in darkness Hail with joy the spreading light; And from eastern coast to western, May the morning chase the night; And redemption

Wave her banner o'er the earth.
Fly abroad thou mighty gospel,
May thy triumphs never cease;
May thy lasting glad dominion,
Multiply and still increase.
Sway thy sceptre,

Saviour! all the world around.

PSALM LVIII•

God is our refuge and strength. Ps. xlvi. 1:

O God! our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come; Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home.

Under the shadow of thy throne,
Thy saints have dwelt secure ;

Sufficient is thine arm alone,
And our defence is sure.

Before the hills in order stood,

Or earth receiv'd her frame; From everlasting thou art God, To endless years the same.

O God! our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come;

Be thou our guard whilst life shall last, And our eternal home.
