HYMN LXXXIX.

A day in thy courts. Ps. lxxxiv. 10.

WELCOME, Sweet day of rest,

That saw the Lord arise ; Welcome to this reviving breast, And these rejoicing eyes.

The King himself comes near,
And feasts his saints to day;
And we by faith may see him here,
And love, and praise, and pray.

One day within the place,

Where thou my God art seen, Is better than ten thousand days Spent in the paths of sin.

My willing soul would stay

In such a frame as this;

And wait to hail the brighter day
Of everlasting bliss.

HYMN XC.

Eye hath not seen nor ear heard. 1 Cor. ii. 9.

WHAT sinners value I resign;

Lord! 'tis enough if thou art mine;
Let me but see thy glorious face,
And feel thy all-sufficient grace.

This life's a dream, an empty show, But the bright world to which I go, Hath joys substantial and sincere; When shall I wake and find me there?

O glorious hour! O bless'd abode !
I shall be near, and like my God;

And flesh and sin no more controul
The sacred pleasures of the soul.

My flesh shall slumber in the ground,
Till the last trumpet's joyful sound;
Then burst the chains with glad surprise,
And in my Saviour's image rise.

HYMN XCI.

Was in all points tempted like as we are. Heb. iv. 15.

WHEN gath'ring clouds around I view,
And days are dark, and friends are few,
On him I lean, who, not in vain,
Experienc'd ev'ry human pain;
He sees my wants, allays my fears,
And counts and treasures all my tears.

If aught should tempt my soul to stray,
From heav'nly wisdom's narrow way;
To flee the good I would pursue,
Or do the sin I would not do;
Still, he who felt temptation's pow'r,
Shall guard me in that dang'rous hour.

And oh! when I have safely pass'd
Through ev'ry conflict but the last;
Still, Lord, unchanging watch beside
My dying bed; for thou hast died;
Then point to realms of endless day,
And wipe the latest tear away.

HYMN XCII.

Them also which sleep in Jesus. 1 Thes. iv. 14.

WHEN the soft dews of kindly sleep
My wearied eyelids gently steep,

Be my last thought how sweet to rest,
For ever on my Saviour's breast.

Sun of my soul! thou Saviour dear!
It is not night if thou art near;
Oh! may no earth-born cloud arise,
To hide thee from thy servant's eyes.

Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without thee I cannot live;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without thee I dare not die.

Come near,

and bless us when we wake,

Ere through the world our way we take,

Keep us, oh! keep us in thy love,

And fit us for thy realms above.

HYMN XCIII.

There are three that bear record in heaven. 1 John. v. 7.

WE give immortal praise

To God the Father's love,
For all our comforts here,

And better hopes above;

He sent his own eternal Son

To die for sins which we have done.

To God the Son, belongs
Immortal glory too;

Who bought us with his blood

From everlasting woe;

And now he lives, and now he reigns,
And sees the fruit of all his pains.

To God the Holy Ghost

Immortal praise we give;

Whose new creating pow'r

Makes the dead soul revive;

His work completes the great design,
And fills our souls with joy divine.

Almighty God! we bow

Before thy glorious throne;

The undivided Three,

And the mysterious One!

Thee we adore, eternal Lord,

And rest our faith upon thy word.
