THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO

St. John.

JOHN the evangelist was a native of Bethsaida in Galilee, son of Zebedee and Salome; by profession a fisherman. It is believed that St. John was the youngest of the apostles. Our Saviour had a particular friendship for him; and John describes himself by the name of that disciple whom Jesus loved. John was one of the four apostles to whom our Lord delivered his predictions relative to the destruction of Jerusalem, and the approaching calamities of the Jewish nation (MARK, xiii. 3). Peter, and James, and John, were chosen to accompany our Saviour on several occasions, when the other apostles were not
