Before I conclude this preface, I mull be allowed to acknowled e my furprife, that Sir lfaac and Dr Newton, £hou d have been fo free in their cenfures againfi'thofe who have attempted to make a caleu lation of future events from the prophecies; fince both chofe learned gentlemen have made no fcruple, pofitively to fix the apra of the papal reign to the eighth century, and theend of it to the twentieth. And indeed he muft be a very cool and difpallion atc commentator upon the apocalypfe, who, not withfianding the great encouragement given to fiudy this book, and the long cham of accompliih ments already pail, will not adventure to odier a probable conjecture concerning the firlt of thofe mportant events, though it is generally believed, that it hath happened a great many centuries ago.
