SCRIPTURE PASSAGE.

Read from St. Matthew v. 1.

ND seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain : and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: and he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger

and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart : for they shall see God.

PRAYER.

Let us pray.

LORD God, our hearts are not clean in Thy sight; give us grace to feel our own weakness and to desire a better life.

Grant that we may not wait for a more convenient season, but begin at once to run the race that is set before us.

Let us watch our lips, that we

may not be deceitful; keep us from hasty and unwise words, from spiteful tempers and malicious thoughts.

Give us the comfort and joy of Thy Presence. If our sins have hidden Thee from us so that we have been disinclined and unfit to pray, restore us to a right mind and kindle once more in us the hunger and thirst after righteousness.

O Lord, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Thou knowest the temptations which beset every one of us.

Some of us are restless and impatient at our work; give us a new motive and a new interest.

Others are selfish and without care or pity for those with whom they live; give them more kind

ness, gentleness, and power of sympathy.

Others are sorrowful and desponding; give them courage and hope.

O Lord, make us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us, a spirit of hopefulness, a spirit of watchfulness, a spirit of purity, a spirit of strength, a spirit of lifeinspiring prayer; and may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all Amen.
