DEDICATION.

DEDICATE these short
Prayers to the Congrega-

tion worshipping in the

Church of St. James, Westmoreland Street, Marylebone, in the years 1874-80, sincerely trusting that some families may find in them new communion, strength, and comfort.

HUGH REGINALD HAWEIS, M.A.

Uttered or unexpressed;

The motion of a hidden fire

That trembles in the breast.

AM constantly applied to by members of my congregation who are unable to find a suitable book of Family Prayers; yet if they go into any ecclesiastical bookseller's shop they will find his counter covered with manuals of devotion of every description, old and new.

The present Family Prayers may be neither better nor worse than many others that have conspicu

ously failed in their object; but they are at all events called forth by direct request to meet the direct wants of many members of my own congregation: if they do this I shall be satisfied, if they fail I shall not be under the necessity of reprinting them.

The following remarks will at once explain my position and my purpose.

I have often noticed that each Christian Sect fastens on the one point which separates it from every other sect, and maintains that to be the essential of Christianity; so that, in forms of prayer especially, one bone of contention after another is thrust forward to the destruction
