CANONS

OF THE

PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH,

IN THE DIOCESE OF INDIANA.

CANON I.

OF THE ORDER OF BUSINESS.

SECTION 1. Upon the opening of the Convention, the Bishop, or other presiding officer, shall appoint the following Standing Committees, consisting of three persons each, one of whom, at least, shall be a clergyman:

1. A Committee on Credentials of Lay Delegates, who shall report at the opening of the afternoon session. 2. A Committee on Accounts.

3. A Committee on Unfinished Business.

4.

A Committee on the Admission of New Parishes. 5. A Committee on Canons.

6. A Committee on Assessments, of whom the Treasurer of the Diocese shall be one, whose duty it shall be to make the assessment for the current Ecclesiastical year, based upon the number of the communicants and the financial ability of each parish, and who shall consider and settle all questions relative thereto.

SEC. 2. The business shall then proceed as follows: 1. The election of a Secretary, who shall have power to appoint an Assistant.

2. The Annual Address of the Bishop, unless he shall prefer another time for its delivery.

3. Miscellaneous Business.

CANON II.

OF THE ORGANIZATION OF NEW PARISHES, AND THEIR ADMISSION INTO UNION WITH THE CONVENTION.

SECTION 1. Any association of ten or more male adults, with the approval of the Ecclesiastical Authority of the Diocese, previously asked and received, consenting to adopt and be governed by the Constitution and Canons of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States, and the Constitution and Canons of this Diocese, assuming some name by which the parish may be designated, and appointing a Vestry to manage its temporal concerns, shall be recognized as a duly organized parish of the Diocese.

SEC. 2. Such duly organized parish may be received into union with the Convention, on presenting a legally attested copy of the proceedings of the meeting for organization, and a certificate of the approval of the Ecclesiastical Authority of the Diocese, of such organization.

SEC. 3. No such parish shall be organized within the boundaries of an existing parish, without the consent of the Vestry of such existing parish; and if the Vestry of the parish, within the boundaries of which it is proposed to establish the new parish, shall refuse consent, they shall give notice to the Bishop, in writing, of the reasons for such refusal; who with the advice of the Standing Committee, shall judge of the reasonableness of such refusal, and decide accordingly; and the judgment of the Bishop, and a majority of the Standing Committee, in the case, shall be final.

CANON III.

OF THE ELECTION OF CHURCH WARDENS AND VESTRYMEN.

SECTION 1. On Easter Monday in each and every year the parishioners of each parish, qualified as hereinafter declared, shall elect church Wardens and Vestrymen
