B

URY'D in Shadows of the Night,

We lie, 'till Chrift reftores the Light;
Wisdom defcends to heal the Blind,
And chase the Darkness of the Mind.

Loft guilty Souls are drown'd in Tears,
'Till the atoning Blood appears;
Then they awake from deep Diftress,
And fing the Lord our Righteoufnefs.

Jefus beholds where Satan reigns,
Binding his Slaves in heavy Chains;
He fets the Pris'ner free, and breaks
The iron Bondage from our Necks.

Poor helpless Worms in thee poffefs
Grace, Wisdom, Power, and Righteousness:
Thou art our mighty All, may we
Give our whole Selves, O Lord, to thee!

To meet the Wrath of Heav'n; But in his Righteousness array'd, We see our Sins forgiv❜n.

Unholy and impure

The Pow'rs of Hell agree

To hold our Souls in vain

And breaks the curfed Chain.

That bring us near to God:

Thy fov'reign Pow'r, thy healing Grace,

And thine atoning Blood.

Subdue the Rebel in our Soul;

HYMN XXVIII.

The fame.

OME, Holy Ghoft, our Hearts inspire,
Let us thy Influence prove;

Source of the old prophetic Fire,

Fountain of Life and Love.

Come, Holy Ghoft (for moy'd by thee

Thy holy Prophets spoke)

Unlock the Truth, thyfelf the Key,

Unfeal the facred Book.

Expand thy Wings, prolific Dove,
Brood o'er our Nature's Night;
On our disorder'd Spirits move,
And let there now be Light.

God thro' himself we then shall know,
If thou within us fhine;

And found with all thy Saints below,
The Depths of Love Divine.

The fame.

HY fhould the Children of a King
Go mourning all their Days?

Great Comforter, defcend and bring
Some Tokens of thy Grace.

Doft thou not dwell in all thy Saints,
And feal the Heirs of Heav'n?
When wilt thou banish their Complaints,
And fhew their Sins forgiv'n?

Affure each Confcience of its Part
In the Redeemer's Blood,
And bear thy Witness in each Heart,
That it is born of God.

Thou art the Earneft of his Love,
The Pledge of Joys to come;
May thy bleft Wings, celeftial Dove,
Safely convey us home!

HE King of Glory fends his Son,
To make his Entrance on this Earth;

Behold the Midnight bright as Noon,
And heav'nly Hofts declare his Birth!

About the young Redeemer's Head,
What Wonders and what Glories meet!
An unknown Star arofe, and led
The Eaftern Sages to his Feet.

Simeo

Simeon and Anna both confpire,
The Infant Saviour to proclaim;
Inward they felt the facred Fire,

And blefs'd the Babe, and own'd his Name.

Let Jews and Greeks blafpheme aloud,

And treat the holy Child with Scorn;
Our Souls adore th' eternal God,
Who condefcended to be born.
