A GOLDEN TREASURY For the Children of God. BY C. H. V. BOGATSKY. EDITED AND ENLARGED BY THE LATE REV. JAMES SMITH, "The Better Land," &c. "Sweet the moments, rich in blessing, LONDON: NELSON AND SONS, PATERNOSTER ROW; EDINBURGH; AND NEW YORK. MDCCCLXVI. PREFACE. OLD books, like old friends, are very often special favourites. Having been long known and often proved, they are peculiarly loved; so that many say of a volume that has been long known, and often enjoyed, as David said of Goliath's sword, "There is none like it, give me that." Bogatsky has been the companion of many of the Lord's people for many long years; it has comforted, cheered, and directed them; so that, though many similar works have been published since, some of which, in some respects, may be even preferable to this, yet they cleave to the old` volume still. Nor do we find fault of this, seeing they can say of it, as one of Job's friends of his disLo, this, we have proved it." course, In order, therefore, to meet this predilection, an attempt has been made to render the work more profitable still. Some of the portions were very short, these have been lengthened, that the different parts of the volume may be more uniform. The present editor's object has been, to keep Christ constantly before the eye, and to enforce the precepts of the Divine word on the Lord's people, by the consideration of what Christ is to them, and has done for them, that so the love of Christ may constrain them to every good word, and every good work. |
