OUR

[blocks in formation]

UR God is love; and all his saints
His image bear below:

The heart with love to God inspir'd,
With love to man will glow.

2 O may we love each other, Lord,
As we are lov'd of Thee!

For none are truly sons of God
Who live in enmity.

3 Heirs of the same immortal bliss,
Our hopes and fears the same,

The cords of love our hearts should bind,
The law of love inflame.

4 So shall the vain contentious world
Our peaceful lives approve,
And wond'ring say, as they of old,
"See how these Christians love!"

HYMN LX. P. M.

COME, ye who love the Lord,

And feel his quick'ning power,

Unite, with one accord,

His goodness to adore;

To heav'n and earth aloud proclaim
Your great Redeemer's glorious Name!

He left his throne above,

His glory laid aside,

Came down on wings of love,

And wept, and bled, and died:

The pangs He bore, what tongue can tell,
To save our souls from death and hell!

3 He burst the grave: He rose
Victorious from the dead;

And thence his vanquish'd foes
In glorious triumph led:

Up thro' the heav'ns the Conqueror rode
Triumphant, to the throne of God.
4 He soon again will come,
His chariot will not stay,
To bear his children home,
To realms of endless day:
Then shall we see his glorious face,
And sing the triumphs of his grace!

HYMN LXI. c. M.

WHEN all Thy mercies, O my God!
My rising soul surveys,

Transported with the view, I'm lost
In wonder, love, and praise.

2 When, in the slipp'ry paths of youth,
With heedless haste I ran,

Thine arm, unseen, convey'd me safe,
And led me up to man.

3 When worn with sickness, oft hast Thou
With health renew'd my face;
And, when in sin and sorrow sunk,
Reviv'd me with Thy grace.

4 Through ev'ry period of my life
Thy goodness I'll pursue;
And after death, in distant worlds,
The glorious theme renew.

HYMN LXII. 6 SEVENS.

ORD, before Thy throne we bend;
Lord, to Thee our hopes ascend;
Servants to our Master true,

Lord, we yield Thee homage due;
Children, to our Sire we fly;

Holy Father, hear our cry!

2 From the heav'ns, Thy dwelling-place,
Hear, and shed Thy pard'ning grace;
In temptation's dang'rous hour
Leave us not beneath its power;
Jesus, Saviour, yet be nigh,
Lord of life and victory!

HYMN LXIII. 6 EIGHTS. PRAISED the earth, in beauty seen. With garlands gay of various green; I praised the sea, whose ample field Shone glorious as a silver shield: And earth and ocean seem'd to say, "Our beauties are but for a day." 2 I praised the sun, whose chariot roll'd On wheels of amber and of gold; I praised the moon, whose softer eye Gleam'd sweetly through the summer sky: And moon and sun in answer said, "Our days of light are numbered." 3 O God, O good beyond compare! If thus Thy meaner works are fair; If thus Thy bounties gild the span Of ruin'd earth, and sinful man; How glorious must the mansion be Where Thy redeem'd shall dwell with Thee!

HYMN LXIV. C. M.

1 ALMIGHTY Father of mankind,

In Thee our hopes remain;
And when the day of trouble comes,
We shall not trust in vain.

2 In early years Thou wast our guide,
And of our youth the friend;
And as our days began with Thee,
With Thee our days shall end.

3 We know the Power in whom we trust,
The arm on which we lean:
He will our Saviour ever be,
Who has our Saviour been.

4 Therefore in life we trust in Thee,
In death we will adore;

And after death will sing Thy praise,
When time shall be no more.

HYMN LXV. L. M.

HEE we adore, Eternal Lord!

1 THE

We praise Thy Name with one accord; Thy saints, who here thy goodness see, Through all the world do worship Thee. 2 To Thee aloud all angels cry,

And ceaseless raise their songs on high; Cherub and Seraph, height o'er height, The heav'ns, and all the powers of light. 3 The Apostles join the glorious throng; The Prophets swell th' immortal song; The Martyrs' noble army raise Eternal anthems to Thy praise.

4 Thee, Holy, Holy, Holy King;

Thee, the Lord God of Hosts, they sing ; Through earth below, and heav'n above, Resound Thy glory and Thy love.

HYMN LXVI. L. M.

66

(From The Spirit of the Psalms.")

LEARN of me," the Saviour cried, "O learn of me, ye sons of pride!

For I am lowly, humble, meek,

No haughty looks high thoughts bespeak!" 2 Thus spake creation's mighty Lord, By all the host of heav'n ador'd,

Who was ere time its course began, And breath'd the breath of life in man. 3 Yes, blest Immanuel! Thou wast mild, Patient, and gentle, as a child;

1

And they who would Thy kingdom see
Must meek and lowly be, like Thee.

HYMN LXVII. P. M.

ORD of mercy and of might,
Of mankind the life and light!
Maker, Teacher infinite!

Jesus! hear, and save!

2 Mighty Monarch! Saviour mild;
Humbled to a mortal child,
Captive, beaten, bound, revil'd;
Jesus! hear, and save!

3 Thron'd above celestial things,
Borne aloft on angels' wings,
Lord of Lords, and King of Kings!
Jesus! hear, and save!
