SO that upon very good Ground I may again fay the State of the Upright after Death is a State of Peace: And that not only in being freed from all the Disturbances, Troubles, and Afflictions of this Life; but according to the most comprehenfive sense of the word Peace amongst the Jews; which included, and was defign'd to express all Bleffings, and Happinefs. Both which we have in that one Text, Bleffed are the Dead that die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, faith the Spirit, that they may rest from their Labours; and their Works do follow them *.

HERE I fhall break off from my first Subject; that I may fay fomething on the fecond. But to comport with the present Seafon I find it will be needful to contract here, as well as on the former.

I WOULD not be thought fo much a Friend to the Flattery of fuch Occafions, as to fay any thing meerly to conform to Custom: but in Juftice to the Person de

Revel. xiv. 13.

ceas'd;

ceas'd: In obedience to the defire of Relations, and Acquaintance; and in hopes of promoting the good of your Souls, I fhall attempt a plain and faithful Narrative of what I know, and have been credibly inform'd concerning him. This I fhall draw up under the Direction of what has been already faid, by obferving the Method at first propos'd; and giving an Account firft of the Character; fecondly the End of this Perfon. In the Confideration of both these I might repeat, and apply to him in particular, what has been spoken of the Perfect Man in general: for he was, in the sense given of Perfection, and Uprightnefs, one to whom those Expreffions did really belong; and his End was Peace.

I. WE fhall endeavonr briefly to lay before you his Character: To introduce which 'tis fit I fhould infcribe his Name at the Beginning (a Name worthy to be recorded on Earth, as no doubt but it is written in Heaven) and acquaint you with his Birth, and Parentage.

THE

THE Perfon we are now to speak of, was Mr. CALEB HEAD: Born of Religious Parents at Slaughter, near Stow in Glocestershire; where his Father yet lives, a noted, ufeful Minifter; whose Piety, and Moderation has recommended him to the Efteem of all that know him: and I reckon it an Unhappiness that I am not amongst the Number. His Circumftances in the World are fuch as fet him above needing, or expecting any Contri butions from the numerous Auditory, that with great Delight attend his Ministry: And what he had defign'd for this Son might have prov'd an Encouragement to a contrary courfe of Life than that he was remarkable for (as we see in the cafe of many who have much less to depend upon) if God had not Gracioufly prevented, by a timely fore-clofing his Thoughts, and Mind to the Allurements, and Temptations of the World.

I HAVE not room to infert here an account of his Converfion; which I have at large under his own Hand: I must refer that to fome other Place and Seafon. I fhall only take notice at prefent, that

the

the time of his being firft impreffed with ftrong and prevailing Convictions, was very early; the carrying on of his Converfation very regular, till he was brought into a fafe and comfortable State. His Obfervations and Remarks all along his Life are folid and fenfible; and abundantly prove him to have been a Perfect and Upright Perfon.

HE was naturally of a referv'd Temper, which however fometimes disadvantageous to a Character in the Efteem of fome; yet when under the right Conduct of a Religious difpofition, proves very ferviceable. It is a fecurity from running into much, and great Acquaintance; which though Good, often proves a Snare; if Bad too commonly promotes our Ruin. That which others of a different Difpofition would have reckon'd a troublesom Confinement; to have been fubject to the ftrict Rules of fo well regulated a Family, as that in which Divine Providence had happily placed him, proved to him eafy and agreeable.

HIS

HIS Master, whom he had ferved the greatest part of the Time of his Apprenticeship, is a Witness to his Faithfulnefs, Understanding, Diligence and Difpatch in his Business. And it is no small Advantage to these Commendations, that they are attefted by so near, and strict an obferver of him.

WHAT time he had to fpare from attendance on his Master's Business, was very much spent in the best Exercises. In Reading useful and good Books, and look. ing into the state of his Soul; both which his Collections and Manuscripts fhew he took great pleasure in. He was fometimes fo very much affected in his retired Devotions as to be over-heard; tho' none more careful to get into fecret than he when thus engag❜d.

HE was a great lover of Family Prayer, and when very young, has been obferved to rife from his Knees, with Eyes that discover'd how he had been concern'd all the while.

Mr. Morton, Linnen-Draper in Cornhill.
