WT ITH the new year a new lesson hook not substitute for the old text-book of the ages, God's word, but a guide to its treasures of wisdom and grace. Lesson-books are designed to aid pupils in the study of the holy Scriptures. Their merit is determined by their success in this one direction. They are teachers, showing the way to the word, hinting, suggesting, leading, inspiring, quickening the student; not doing the work for him, but urging him to work for himself.

The Lesson System has from the beginning been a graded system. In leaves, magazines, and question-books, it has adapted its instructions to three or four different classes of pupils. We this year provide a new series of three graded Question-books: 1. The Senior; 2. The Intermediate; 3. The Beginner's. The utmost care has been taken in their preparation and adaptation.

The references employed in the Scripture text are from the "Teacher's Bible" of the American Tract Society. The chronology of the New Testament lessons is that adopted by Dr. JAMES STRONG in his "Harmony of the Gospels." The chronology of the Old Testament lessons is that of ARCHBISHOP USHER, in general use.

The suggestive pictorial "symbols" of the lessons were designed by J. B. PHIPPS, Esq., of Baltimore, and engraved by J. D. FELTER, of New York. The "Quarterly Hymns" were written by Miss MARY A. LATHBURY. Four temperance lessons are introduced, in the selection and preparation of which we have been aided by Miss JULIA COLMAN and Mrs. M. J. HACKETT. The "Outlines" of the lessons are the result of careful study by the following committee: Rev. J. L. HURLBUT, JAMES M'GEE, Esq., G. H. BABCOCK, Esq., and the EDITOR. The first-named gentleman, now officially associated with the EDITOR, is responsible for the principal part of this work. The "Lesson Hymns" were selected and the "Descriptive Index" prepared by Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Cook, of Hoboken, New Jersey. G. H. BABCOCK, Esq., designed the maps of this series.

Thus it will be seen that a large committee has been employed in the development of this excellent lesson series. All this varied work has been submitted to rigid editorial censorship, and will be found worthy of confidence, and calculated to accomplish great good.

To the God of all grace, upon whose energies we depend for success in teaching and preaching and living, be glory and dominion forever! Amen. J. H. VINCENT.
