To the Cross of Christ the Saviour In the Cross I'm meekly trusting, T I have brought my weary soul,
Chief of sinners though I be; Burdened, faint, and broken-hearted, JESUS died for my transgressions, Praying, JESUS, make me whole.
JESUS rose to set me free.
Thou alone, etc.
LORD, before Thy Cross I'm lying,
Let Thy blood flow over me;
Then the sins which are so scarlet JESU, mercy! JESU, mercy !
Washed as white as wool shall be. LORD, be merciful to me.
Thou alone, etc. Amen.
[Alternative Tune No. 249.] LOLY JESUS, I have crowned Theel JESUS, grant me true contrition With a crown of piercing thorn,
For these bitter sins of mine, And have stood with those around Thee Grief that knows no intermission, Who have loaded Thee with scorn.
Penitence, and grace divine.
I have nailed Thee, faint and bleeding, Give me, LORD, Thine absolution To the tree, the shameful tree,
For the sins I now abhor, All Thy pangs and woes unheeding,
And the steadfast resolution
Never to offend Thee more.
By Thy sufferings all for me,
Hear, O LORD, my Litany. Amen.
[Alternative Tune No. 131.] HEAR Thy children, gentle JESUS, But our sins it was that stung Thee,
Hear Thy children cry to Thee, Not the scourge and nail and spear. Self and sin no more shall please us; 'Twas our sins alone that hung Thee Hear our solemn Litany.
On the Cross, O Saviour dear.
Thou didst suffer, gentle JESUS,
Bitter shame and agony ;
Thou didst hang upon the Tree.
Thou wert pierced, O Holy JESUS
Pierced that sinners might not die ; 0, let sin no longer please us, Make us Thine eternally.
Thou didst bear the nails and spitting, Gentle JESUS, Thou hast won us
By Thy Passion and Thy love;
Gentle JESUS, deign to own us Meekly on that mimic throne.
In the Land of Rest above. Amen.
JESUS, Name all names above,
JESUS, clad in purple raiment, J Saviour, best and dearest,
For poor sinners making payment, Fount of grace and perfect love,
Let not all Thy woe and pain,
Let not Calvary be in vain.
And its waves roll higher,
As the storm draws nigher; JESUS, crowned with thorns for me,
JESUS, leave me not to languish, Scourged for my transgression,
Helpless, hopeless, full of anguish; Witnessing, through agony,
Tell me—“Verily I say That Thy good confession :
Thou shalt be with Me to-day!”
READ hours that slowly rolled
Thy Mother watched Thee there ; 'Mid pain and anguish passed,
Oh awful day, Thine enemies deride, Until, in agony untold
But we would watch in silence by Thy Death came to Thee at last.
Side. Oh dreadful day when sin and suffering met,
Alas, we wound Thee too, Day, no true child of Thine can e'er forget. By many a grievous sin,
And crucify the LORD anew Thy foes were standing near,
Who died our peace to win ; They mocked Thee and reviled,
Oh awful day, Love's sacrifice complete, Without one thought of shame or fear Low in the dust we kneel at Thy dear Feet.
They spent their sury wild.
How could we leave Thee yet again
And thoughtless pleasures seek? And those who loved Thee well
Oh awful day, when JESUS died for me, Thy pain must also share,
LORD, keep me all this day alone with In speechless grief no words could tell
