2 If noisy war or strife abound,
We grieve the peaceful dove,
His gracious influence is found
In paths of truth and love.

3 Should we indulge one secret sin,
Or disregard his laws,

His succour and support divine,
Th' heavenly guest withdraws.

4 To sin, O leave us not a prey,
Nor yet to Satan's hand:
But guide us in the heav'nly way,
T'our Emmanuel's land.

S. M. The witness of the Spirit.

ANON.

SPIRIT of truth, come down,
Reveal the things of God,

Make thou to us Christ's Godhead known,

Apply his precious blood.

His merits glorify

That each may clearly see

Jesus, who did for sinners die,
Hath surely died for me.

No man can truly say,
That Jesus is the Lord
Unless thou take the veil away,
And breathe the living word:

Then, only then, we feel
Our interest in his blood,
And cry with joy unspeakable,
"Thou art my LORD my GOD!”

8. 6. 8. The Day of Pentecost.

COTTERILL,

L songs of praises fill the sky!

Christ, our ascended Lord,

Sends down his spirit from on high,
According to his word:

All hail the day of Pentecost,
The coming of the Holy Ghost?

2 The Spirit by his heavenly breath,
New life creates within;

He quickens sinners from the death
Of trespasses and sin:

All hail the day of Pentecost,
The coming of the Holy Ghost!

3 The things of Christ the Spirit takes,
And shows them unto men;
The fallen soul his temple makes,
God's image stamps again:
All hail the day of Pentecost,
The coming of the Holy Ghost!

4 Come Holy Spirit, from above,
With thy celestial fire;

Come, and with flames of zeal and love, Our hearts and tongues inspire:

Be this our day of Pentecost,

The coming of the Holy Ghost!

S. M. The Descent of the Spirit.

MONTGOMERY.

[blocks in formation]

ORD God, the Holy Ghost,
In this accepted hour,

2

As on the day of Pentecost,
Descend in all thy pow'r:

We meet with one accord
In our appointed place,

And wait the promise of our Lord
The spirit of all grace.

3 Like mighty rushing wind
Upon the waves beneath,
Move with one impulse every mind,
One soul, one feeling breathe:

4 The young, the old inspire
With wisdom from above:

And give us hearts and tongues of fire To pray, and praise, and love.—

7's. The Song of the Cherubim.

1 EE th' glorious Cherubim

BOWRING.

Thronging round th' ETERNAL's throne;
Hark! they sing their holy hymn
To the unknown THREE IN ONE.
All-supporting Deity,

Praise-eternal praise to thee!

2 Rest, ye worldly tumults, rest!
Here let all be peace and joy ;-
Grief, no longer rend our breast;
Tears, no more bedew our eye:
All-supporting Deity,

Praise eternal praise to thee!

3 Heav'n directed spirit, rise
To the temple of the skies!
Join the ranks of angels bright,
Near th' ETERNAL'S dazzling light:
All-supporting Deity,

Praise--eternal praise to thee!

7's. The Trinity adored. ANON.

1 HOLY, holy, holy, Lord!
Self-existent Deity,

By the hosts of heav'n ador'd
Teach us how to worship thee.
Only uncreated mind,

Wonders in thy nature meet;
Perfect unity combin'd
With society complete.

2 All perfection dwells in thee,
Now to us obscurely known,
Three in one, and one in three,
Great Jehovah, God alone!
Be our all, O Lord, divine!
Father, Saviour, vital breath!
Body, spirit, soul, be thine,
Now, and at, and after death.
