made known to his followers his own supreme divinity. His opponents, instead of assuming the strong ground of declaring that he had claimed equality with God, resorted to far sought pleas, which put to the blush their own malevolence, and manifested the innocence of their victim. And when he had died and risen again, when, if ever, the revelation of his divinity must at length have been made to his disciples, then, in their first public address, and on each successive occasion, as far as the sacred historian has informed us, they taught the simple Unitarian system. The Jews, violently opposed to them, and devotedly attached to the doctrine of the divine unity, never accused them of an interference with that doctrine, never fancied it would appear, that they conceived of Jesus as a God. Such is the general testimony of the Jewish and Christian dispensations against the doctrines of the Trinity, and the supreme divinity of Christ.
