And charge my flesh, whene'er it rise,
To leave them in the dust.

5 My purer spirit shall not fear
To put this body on:

Its tempting pow'rs no more are there,
Its lusts and passions gone!

HYMN CL. Rom, XI. 25-6.
1 FATHER of faithful Abra'm hear
Our earnest suit for Abra'm's seed!
They claim the sympathetic prayer
From us, adopted in their stead,
Who mercy through their fall obtain,
And Christ by their rejection gain
2 Hast thou for ever, Lord, forsook,
For ever cast thine own away?
Wilt thou not bid the murd❜rers look
On him they pierc'd, and weep and pray?
Yes, gracious Lord, thy word is past;
"All Israel shall be sav'd at last."

3 Come, then, thou great Deliv❜rer, come,
The veil from Jacob's heart remove;
Receive thine ancient people home,
That, quicken'd by thy dying love,
The world may their reception view,
And shout to God the glory due!

HYMN CLI. Rom. XII. 1.

1 AND will th' eternal King

So mean a gift regard?

That off'ring, Lord, with joy we bring,
Which thine own hand prepar'd.

2 We own thy various claim; 21
And to thine altar move,

The willing victims of thy grace,
And bound with cords of love.

HYMN CLII. 1 Cor. 1. 21-4.

1 THIS is the word of truth and love, Sent to the nations from above :* Jehovah here resolves to shew, What his almighty grace can do. 2 This remedy did wisdom find, To heal diseases of the mind; This sov'reign balm, whose virtues can Restore the ruin'd creature, man.. 3 The gospel bids the dead revive; Sinners obey the voice, and live:

Dry bones are rais'd, and cloth'd afresh, And hearts of stone are turn'd to flesh. 4 Where Satan reign'd in shades of night, The gospel strikes a heav'nly light; Our lusts its wondrous power controuls, And calms the rage of angry souls. 5 Lions and beasts of savage name Put on the nature of the lamb;

While the vain world esteem it strange,
Gaze, and admire, and hate the change.
6 May but this grace my soul renew,
Let sinners gaze, and hate me too!
The word that saves me does engage
A sure defence from all their rage.

HYMN CLIII. 1 Cor. 1. 30.
1 BURIED in shadows of the night
We lie, till Christ restores the light;
Wisdom descends to heal the blind,
And chase the darkness of the mind.

2 Our guilty souls are drown'd in tears, Till his atoning blood appears:

Then we awake from deep distress, And sing "The Lord our Righteousness." 3 Our very frame is mix'd with sin; His Spirit makes our natures clean: Such virtues from his suff'rings flow, At once to cleanse and pardon too. 4 Jesus beholds where Satan reigns, Binding his slaves in heavy chains : He sets the pris'ners free, and breaks The iron bondage from our necks. 5 Poor helpless worms in thee possess Grace, wisdom, power, and righteousness: Thou art our mighty All, and we Give our whole selves, O Lord, to thee.

HYMN CLIV. 1 Cor. 11. 9-10.

1 NOR eye has seen, nor ear has heard,
Nor sense nor reason known,
What joys the father has prepar'd
For those that love his Son.

3 But the good Spirit of the Lord
Reveals a heav'n to come:

The beams of glory in his word
Allure and guide us home.

3 Pure are the joys above the sky,
And all the region peace;

No wanton lips, nor envious eye,
Can see or taste the bliss.

4 Those holy gates for ever bar

Pollution, sin, and shame:

None shall obtain admittance there,..
But foll'wers of the Lamb.

5 He keeps the Father's book of life;
There all their names are found,
The hypocrite in vain shall strive
To tread the heav'nly ground.

HYMN CLV. 1 Cor. i. 21.

I

1 How vast the treasure we possess!
How rich thy bounty, King of grace!
This world is ours, and worlds to come:
Earth is our lodge, and heav'n our home.
2 All things are ours; the gifts of God:
The purchase of a Saviour's blood;
While the good Spirit shews us how
To use, and to improve them too.
3 If peace and plenty crown my days,
They help me, Lord, to speak thy praise:
If bread of sorrows be my food,
Those sorrows work my lasting good.
4 I would not change my blest estate
For all the world calls good or great:
And while my faith can keep her hold,
I envy not the sinner's gold."

5 Father, I wait thy daily will:

Thou shalt divide my portion still:

Grant me on earth what seems thee best, Till death and heav'n reveal the rest.

HYMN CLVI. 1 Cor. xv. 55-7.

1 OH for an overcoming faith,
To cheer my dying hours,

To triumph o'er the monster death,"
And all his frightful powers!

2 Joyful with all the strength I have,
My quiv'ring lips should sing,

[ocr errors]

"Where is thy boasted vict'ry, Grave! "And where the monster's sting!"r 3 If sin be pardon'd, I'm secure ; Death has no sting beside: The law gives sin its damning power; But Christ, my ransom, died.

4 Now to the God of victory

Immortal thanks be paid,

Who makes us conqu'rors while we die,
Through Christ, our living head!

HYMN CLVII. 1 Cor. xvi. 13.

1 ARE we the soldiers of the cross,
The foll'wers of the Lamb?
And shall we fear to own his cause,
Or blush to speak his name?

2 Now we must fight, if we would reign;" Increase our courage, Lord!

We'll bear the toil, endure the pain,
Supported by thy word.

3 Suppress our shame, subdue our fear,
Arm us with heav'nly zeal;

That we may make thy power appear,
And works of praise fulfil.

4 Thy saints in all this glorious war
Shall conquer, though they die :
They see the triumph from afar,
And seize it with their eye.

5 When that illustrious day shall rise,
And all thine armies shine

In robes of vict'ry, through the skies," The glory shall be thine
