2. I want a heart to pray,

To pray and never cease;
Not to repine at thy delay,
Or wish my sufferings less.

3. I want a sober mind,

A self renouncing will,

That tramples down and casts behind
The baits of pleasing ill.

4. I want a godly fear,

A quick discerning eye,

That looks to Thee when sin is near,
And sees the tempter fly.

5. I want a true regard,

A single, steady aim

(Unmov'd by threatening or reward) To Thee and thy great name.

6. I want a just concern

For thine immortal praise;

A

pure

desire that all may learn

To glorify thy grace.

7. I want with all my heart

Thy pleasure to fulfil,

To know myself, and what Thou art,

And what thy perfect will.

(Watchman.)

HYMN 15.

"The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord." PROV. xvi. 1.

1. LORD, teach us how to pray aright,
With reverence and with fear;
Though dust and ashes in thy sight,
We may, we must draw near:
We perish, if we cease from prayer;
Oh! grant us power to pray,
And when to meet Thee we prepare,
Lord, meet us by the way.

2. Give deep humility; the sense
Of godly sorrow give;

A strong desiring confidence
To see thy face and live;
Faith in the only sacrifice,

Than can for sin atone;

To cast our hopes, to fix our eyes
On Christ, on Christ alone:

3. Patience to watch, and wait, and weep,
Though mercy long delay;

Courage our fainting souls to keep,

And trust Thee, though Thou slay:
Give these; and then thy will be done;
Thus strengthen'd with all might,
We, through thy Spirit and thy Son,
Shall pray, and pray aright.

HYMN 16.

"His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life, and godliness." 2 PETER i. 3.

1. LORD, when we creation scan,

What thy power has done for man,
Lord, our thankful hearts agree
How much man must owe to Thee.

2. Every breath that heaves the breast,
Every sound by voice express'd,
Every thought the mind sets free,
Tells, that life we owe to Thee.

3. Every note that cheers the vale,
Every sweet that scents the gale,
Every blooming flower we see,
Tells, that joy we owe to Thee.

4. When we think what we have been,
Sunk in sorrow, lost in sin;
Now from sin and sorrow free,
Heav'n itself we owe to Thee.

HYMN 17.

"I have waited for thy salvation, O Lord." GEN. xlix. 18.

1. Love divine, all love excelling,

Joy of heaven to earth come down,
Fix in us thy glorious dwelling,
All thy truth with mercy crown!

Jesu, Thou art all compassion;

Pure, unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with thy salvation,
Enter every trembling heart!

2. Come, all mighty to deliver,
Let us all thy grace receive;
Quickly come again, and never,

Never more thy temple leave!
Thee we would be alway blessing;
Serve Thee as thy hosts above;
Pray, and praise Thee, without ceasing,
Glory in thy perfect love.

3. Finish then thy new creation,
Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us find thy great salvation.
Let us all thy goodness see.
Chang'd from glory unto glory,

Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

HYMN 18.

"O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of face." DAN. ix. 7.

1. MY GOD, how perfect are thy ways!

But mine polluted are:

Sin twines itself about my praise,

And slides into my prayer.

с

2. When I would tell what Thou hast done

To save me from my sin,

I cannot make thy mercies known,
But self applause creeps in.

3. Divine desire, that holy flame,
Thy grace creates in me;
Alas! impatience is its name,
When it returns to Thee.

4. This heart, a fountain of vile thoughts,
How doth it overflow!

While self upon the surface floats,
Still rising from below.

5. Let others in the gaudy dress
Of fancied merit shine

The Lord shall be my righteousness,
The Lord for ever mine.

HYMN 19.

"I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches." Ps. lxiii. 6.

1. MY GOD, whilst here I lie awake,

The sole possession of me take;

From midnight terrors me secure,

And guard my heart from thoughts impure.
