For, as his lips pronounce, ye go
To endless blifs, or hopeless woe.

V.

LORD, to mine eyes this scene display
Frequent thro' each revolving day;
And let thy grace my foul prepare
To meet its full redemption there.

HYMN CXLVII. Common Metre.

Hope of Heaven by the Refurrection of CHRIST.

I.

LESS'D be the everlasting GOD,
The Father of our Lord;

BLE

Be his abounding mercy prais'd,
His majesty ador'd.

II.

When from the dead he rais'd his Son,

And call'd him to the sky,
He gave our fouls a lively hope,
That they should never die.
III.

What tho' his uncontroul'd decree
Command us back to duft;

Yet, as the LORD our SAVIOUR rofe,
So all his foll'wers must.

IV.

There's an inheritance divine
Referv'd against that day;
'Tis uncorrupted, undefil'd,
And cannot fade away.
V.

Saints by the pow'r of GoD are kept
'Till the falvation come;

We walk by faith as strangers here, 'Till CHRIST fhall call us home.

HYMN CXLVIII. Common Metre.

The Hope of Heaven a Support in Death.

I.

HERE is a land of pure delight,
Where faints immortal reign;

TH

Infinite day excludes the night,
And pleafures banish pain.
II.

There everlafting fpring abides,

And never with'ring flow'rs:
Death, like a narrow fea, divides
This heav'nly land from ours.
III.

Sweet fields beyond the fwelling flood
Stand drefs'd in living green:

So

So to the Jews old Canaan ftood,
While Jordan roll'd between.
IV.

But tim'rous mortals ftart and shrink,
To cross this narrow fea;

And linger, fhiv'ring, on the brink,
And fear to launch away.

ས.

Oh, could we make our doubts remove,
Those gloomy doubts that rise;
And view the Canaan that we love,
With unbeclouded eyes;

VI.

Could we but ftand, as Mofes ftood,
And view the landskip o'er;

Not Jordan's ftreams, nor death's cold flood,
Should fright us from the shore.

HYMN CXLIX. Long Metre.

Faith in a future State.

1.

IS by the faith of joys to come

T We walk tho' deferts dark as night;

'Till we arrive at heav'n our home, Faith is our guide, and faith our light. H 6

II.

The want of fight fhe well fupplies,
She makes the gates of heav'n appear;
Far into diftant worlds fhe pries,
And brings eternal glories near.
III.

Chearful we tread the defert thro',
While faith infpires a heav'nly ray,
Tho' lions roar, and tempests blow,
And rocks and dangers fill the way.
IV.

So Abrah❜m, by divine command,
Left his own houfe to walk with GOD;
His faith beheld the promis'd land,
And fir'd his zeal along the road.

HYMN CL. Common Metre.

Support under Trouble from the Hope of Heaven.

WH

I.

WHEN I can read my title clear
To manfions in the skies,

I bid farewel to ev'ry fear,

And wipe my weeping eyes.

11.

Should foes against my peace engage,
And cruel darts be hurl'd;

Then

Then I could fmile at all their rage,
And face a frowning world.
III.

Let cares like a wild deluge come,
And ftorms of forrow fall;
May I but fafely reach my home,
My GOD, my heav'n, my all:
IV.

There shall I bathe my weary foul,
In feas of heav'nly rest;
And not a wave of trouble roll,
Across my peaceful breast.

HYMN CLI. Common Metre.

NOR

Heaven invifible and holy.

I.

JOR eye hath feen, nor ear hath heard,
Nor sense, nor reafon known,

What joys the Father hath prepar'd,
For those who love the Son.

II.

But the good spirit of the LORD
Reveals a heav'n to come;
The beams of glory, in the word,
Allure and guide us home.
