4 When, worn by toil, their spirits fail,
Bid them the glorious future hail;
Bid them the crown of life survey,
And onward urge their conqu'ring way.
5 So o'er the Indian's gloomy night,
Truth shall diffuse her radiant light,
And mild religion's power controul
The stormy passions of his soul.

Revelation i, 7. (P. M.)

1 LO! he comes, with clouds descending, Once for favor'd sinners slain! Thousand, thousand, saints attending, Swell the triumph of his train :

Hallelujah!

Jesus now shall ever reign!

2 Ev'ry eye shall now behold him, Rob'd in dreadful majesty :

Those who set at nought and sold him, Pierc'd and nail'd him to the tree, Deeply wailing,

Shall the great Messiah see!

3 Ev'ry island, sea, and mountain, Heav'n and earth shall flee away; All who hate him must, confounded, Hear the trump proclaim the day; "Come to judgment!

Come to judgment, come away!"

4 Yea, amen! let all adore thee,
High on thy eternal throne,
Saviour! take the pow'r and glory,
Claim the kingdom for thy own:
Oh! come quickly,

Hallelujah! come, Lord, come!

Luke ii, 11. (7's. double.)

1 HARK! the herald angels sing,

66

Glory to the new-born king;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconcil'd."
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumphs of the skies;
With th' angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."
2 Christ, by highest heav'n ador'd,
Christ, the everlasting Lord;
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of a virgin's womb;
Veil'd in flesh, the Godhead see,
Hail th' incarnate Deity!

Pleas'd as man with men t' appear,
Jesus, our Immanuel, here.

3 Hail, the heav'n-born Prince of peace!
Hail, the Sun of righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,

Ris'n with healing in his wings.

Mild he lays his glory by;
Born, that man no more may die;
Born to raise the sons of earth;
Born to give them second birth.
4 Come, desire of nations, come!
Fix in us thy humble home;
Raise the woman's conqu'ring seed,
Bruise in us the serpent's head.
Adam's likeness now efface;
Stamp thine image in its place;
Second Adam, from above,
Reinstate us in thy love.

Matthew ii, 2. (7's.)

1 SONS of men, behold from far,
Hail the long expected star;
Jacob's star that gilds the night,
Guides bewilder'd nature right.
2 Mild it shines on all beneath,
Piercing through the shades of death;
Scatt'ring error's wide-spread night,
Kindling darkness into light.

3 Nations all, remote and near,
Haste to see your God appear;
Haste for him your hearts prepare;
Meet him manifested there.

4 Sing ye morning stars again,

God descends to dwell with men ;
Deigns for man his life t' employ ;
Shout, ye sons of God, for joy.

Isaiah ix, 6. (P.M.)

1 HIS kingdom comes, ye saints rejoice,
Let earth and heav'n unite their voice,
To swell the lofty strain:
Proclaim the joyful news abroad,
The mighty King! the glorious God!
He comes on earth to reign.

2 High o'er the pomp of worldly state, On chosen Zion's lofty seat,

Jehovah sets his throne:

Now shall the lands confess his pow'r,
And all the earth his name adore,
And serve the Lord alone.

3 Before the terrors of his face
Let mortal man his pride abase,
And ev'ry idol fall:

Prostrate be ev'ry haughty foe,
The pomp and pow'r of earth lie low,
That God be all in all.

Isaiah ix, 2-8. (c.M.)

1 THE race that long in darkness pin'd, Have seen a glorious light:

The people dwell in day, who dwelt
In death's surrounding night.

2 To hail thy rise, thou better sun,
The gath'ring nations come,
Joyous, as when the reapers bear
The harvest treasures home.

3 To us a child of hope is born,
To us a son is giv'n:

Him shall the tribes of earth obey,
Him all the hosts of heav'n.

4 His name shall be the Prince of Peace, For evermore ador'd:

The Wonderful-the Counsellor,
The great and mighty Lord.

Philippians i, 21. (7's. double.)

1 OBJECT of my first desire,
Jesus, crucified for me!
All to happiness aspire,

Only to be found in thee:
Thee to praise and thee to know,
Constitute our bliss below:
Thee to see, and thee to love,
Constitute our bliss above.

2 Lord, it is not life to live,
If thy presence thou deny,
Lord, if thou thy presence give,
'Tis no longer death to die:
Source and giver of repose,
Singly from thy smile it flows;
Peace and happiness are thine,
Mine they are, if thou art mine!
