PRAYER IN TIME OF SICKNESS.

GODLY sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of.

He who confesseth and forsaketh his sins shall find mercy.

The angel of the Lord tarrieth about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

We being many are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

Is any afflicted, let him pray; let him seek to the Lord from whom cometh help and salvation. When our flesh and our heart faileth, be thou, O Lord, the strength of our heart and our portion for ever.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

PRAYER FOR PATIENCE TO SUFFER.

O Lord Jesu Christ, our great High Priest, who art able to succour all them to the uttermost who come unto God by thee, save us, we beseech thee, who have no hope but in thy merits and intercession, sanctify to us all the pains of body and all the terrors of mind which

PRAYER FOR RECOVERY OR HUMBLE SUBMISSION.

Almighty and most merciful God and Saviour, we humbly beseech thee to extend thy accustomed goodness to that member of this family who is now grieved with sickness: sanctify, we beseech thee, this thy fatherly correction to him (or her), that the sense of his weakness may add strength to his faith, and seriousness to his repentance; that if it shall be thy good pleasure to restore him to his former health, he may lead the residue of his life in thy fear and to thy glory; or else give him grace so to take thy visitation, that after this painful life is ended he may dwell with thee in life everlasting, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

stand about us, to guard and receive our souls at our departure out of this world, and to conduct us into the land of righteousness, unto thy holy hill and heavenly kingdom, the habitation of light and peace, of joy and gladness, unto Mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the first-born which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, there to reign with thine elect angels, thy blessed saints departed, thy holy Prophets and glorious Apostles, in all joy, glory, felicity, and happiness, for ever and ever. Amen.

COLLECT.

O God, who knowest us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright; grant to us such strength and protection, as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

MISCELLANEOUS PRAYERS.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY OF SUFFERING AND

AFFLICTION.

THE Lord hear thee in the day of trouble, the name of the God of Jacob defend thee:

Send thee help from the sanctuary; and strengthen thee out of Zion.

The Lord will not cast off for ever, though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.

In all our afflictions he is afflicted, his compassions fail not; to bind up the broken-hearted, and to comfort all that mourn, to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion; to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. In the time of my trouble I called on the Lord, and the Lord heard me.

All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth, unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.

Affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground.

Whom the Lord loveth he correcteth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. Why art thou cast down,

my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance and my God.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

PRAYER.

O Lord God, who for our sins art justly displeased, and hath brought us low, and bowed down our rebellious hearts in sorrow and affliction, mercifully hear us, and assist us in this time of trouble and adversity; let the comfort of thy Holy Spirit support us under every dispensation of thy divine providence, and bring forth in us the fruits of true repentance unto holiness of life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Then shall all repeat

PRAYER FOR THE DAY OF SUFFERING AND

AFFLICTION.

FROM THE PSALMS.

Turn thee unto us, and have mercy upon us, O Lord, for we are desolate and in misery: the sorrows of our hearts are enlarged, O bring thou us out of all our troubles; look upon our adversity and misery, and forgive us all our sin. Our sins have taken such fast hold of us, we are not able to look up; they are more in number than the hairs of our head, and our heart hath failed us; our misdeeds prevail against us; O be thou merciful unto our sins; O hide not thy face from us, nor cast thy servants away in thy displeasure: withdraw not thou thy mercy from us, O Lord, let thy loving kindness and thy truth always preserve us; if thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss, O Lord, who may abide it? but there is mercy with thee, and thou dost not willingly afflict: grant us thy peace, through Jesus Christ, our hope and strength. Amen.

PRAYER FOR SUBMISSION TO THE DIVINE WILL.

Thou knowest, O Lord, the weakness and frailty of our nature, and therefore we beseech thee to give thy servants, who are most nearly concerned in this visitation, a constant supply of thy good Spirit, to enable them to bear it with humility, patience, resignation, and submission to thy divine will, as becometh the
