dom read to him, finding that no reward had been given him for so great a service, called for Haman, and said to him, "What shall be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour?" Now Haman was a vain and foolish man; and he thought in his heart, "To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself?" Therefore he replied, "For the man whom the king delighteth to honour, let the royal apparel be brought, which the king useth to wear, and the horse that the king rideth upon, and the royal crown which is set upon his head; and let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble princes, that they may array the man withal whom the king delighteth to honour, and bring him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, 'thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour.""

Then the king told Haman to do all that he had said, to

Mordecai the Jew, who sat at his gate. Haman was sadly disappointed when he heard this; but he was obliged to do as the king told him: so when he had clothed his enemy Mordecai in fine raiment, and set him on a horse, he led him through the street of the city, proclaiming before him, "Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour."

Haman must have been much mortified when he was obliged to do honour to the man whom he so bitterly hated; but this was not the worst, for when Esther told the king that she and her people were soon to be destroyed, and that it was Haman who had plotted this evil against them, Ahasuerus ordered him to be put to death; and he was hanged on the very gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai.

Thus are the wicked snared in the work of their own hands. God disappointeth the devices of the crafty; he putteth down the mighty from their seat, and scattereth the proud in the imagination of their hearts. (Ps. ix. 16; Job v. 12; Luke i. 51, 52.)
