Have you sinned as none else in the

world have before you?

Are you blacker than all other creatures in guilt?

O fear not! O fear not! the mother that bore you

Loves you less than the SAVIOUR Whose Blood you have spilt!

O come, then, to JESUS, and say how you love Him,

And swear at His feet you will keep

in His grace; For one tear that is shed by a sinner can move Him,

And your sins will drop off in His tender embrace.

I

In this world ever-changing I ask for no part;

have chosen CHRIST JESUS to be my possession.

I have chosen CHRIST JESUS as
LORD of my heart.

O JESU, LORD JESU, I love Thee
alone,

O JESU, LORD JESU, O make me
Thine own.

What heed I the world with its goods and its treasure?

My treasure is JESUS, in heaven above,

In JESUS alone can my heart find its pleasure,

The riches I covet is Heavenly
Love.

O JESU, LORD JESU, Who lovest me
well,

O JESU, LORD JESU, mine Enemy quell.

The world and the devil may hate me with rancour,

May threat me with misery, torture, and death,

But on JESUs alone will I stay me and anchor,

In JESUS put confidence while I have breath.

O JESU, LORD JESU, my trust is in Thee,

O JESU, LORD JESU, deliver Thou

me.

And e'en should the Cross with sore

burden oppress me, Should tears be my portion for meat and for drink,

I will bear it in patience, for JESUS will bless me,

And give me the Chalice of Love when I shrink.

O JESU, LORD JESU, my ransom is paid,

O JESU, LORD JESU, Thy Cross is mine aid.

O JESU, LORD JESU, increase my heart's glowing, And help, that in love I may con

stantly stand, Unite us together, Thy Presence bestowing,

And bring me at last to the heavenly Land.

O JESU, LORD JESU, I long and I
pine,

O JESU, LORD JESU, for ever be
mine.
Amen.

To Thee, O truest Bridegroom,
My soul in thought I raise,
To Thee, my heart's Belovéd,
I sing my hymn of praise.

O let my inmost being

Be ever merged in Thine, Make Thou my heart Thy dwelling, O JESU CHRIST Divine:

That every thought of evil

Thy presence forth may chase,
And only Thou, my SAVIOUR,
Fill that abiding-place.

So let it find, dear Master,
In Thee alone its rest,
So let it seek Thee, JESU,
And gaining Thee, be blest.

401.

O

Amen.

6 of 8.

PARADISE, O happy rest,
Where dwelleth aye the Bride-
I would that this poor yearning heart
groom blest,
For thee I hope, for thee I long,
Might nevermore from thee depart,
And in my hope alone am strong.

My very hope is pain to me,
When from afar I look to thee,
O may I, drawing close and near,
Joy in that realm which knows no
tear.

To-day Thy gate is open,
And all who enter in

THOUGH mortal strength be weak, Shall find a Father's welcome,
Though earth and hell withstand,
Jerusalem above I seek,
With pilgrim staff in hand.

Through the dark sea I press,
Behind my Leader true,
And through the dreary wilderness
My pilgrimage pursue.

The pleasant Land I see,
With peace and plenty blest,
The Land of perfect liberty,
The Land of endless rest.

There JESUS keeps secure
His people by His side,

And pardon for their sin.
The past shall be forgotten,

A present joy be given,
A future grace be promised-
A glorious crown in heaven.
To-day the FATHER calls me,
The HOLY SPIRIT waits,
The blesséd Angels gather

Around the heavenly gates.
No question will be asked me,
How often I have come,
Although I oft have wandered,
It is my FATHER's home.

And clothes in raiment white and O all-embracing mercy,

pure

The Church, His spotless Bride.

Where living streams arise,
His flock the Shepherd leads,
With richest fruits of Paradise
The hungry souls He feeds.

Before the SAVIOUR'S Face
His ransomed people fall,
They ever laud Him for His grace,
Who freely giveth all.

He shows the nail-pierced Feet,
The wounded Hands and Side,
They sing, with praises just and meet,
The Lamb Who lives, yet died.
To Him who reigns on high,
The great Archangels sing,
Thrice holy LORD, they ceaseless cry,
Almighty GoD and King,

Which was and is the same,
And evermore shall be,

All glory to Thy holy Name,
Eternal TRINITY. Amen.

403.

7, 6, 7, 6, 7, 6, 7, 6.

TO-DAY Thy mercy calls me,
To wash away my sin,

However great my trespass,

Whate'er I may have been,

However long from mercy
I may have turned away,

Thou ever-open door,

What should I do without Thee
When heart and life run o'er?
When all things seem against me
To drive me to despair,

I know one gate is open,

One ear will hear my prayer.

FLING out the banner! let it float Skyward and seaward, high and wide;

The sun, that lights its shining folds,
The Cross, on which the SAVIOUR
died.

Fling out the banner! Angels bend
In anxious silence o'er the sign;
And vainly seek to comprehend
The wonder of the Love Divine.
Fling out the banner! heathen lands
Shall see from far the glorious sight,
And nations, crowding to be born,
Baptize their spirits in its light.
Fling out the banner! sin-sick souls
That sink and perish in the strife,
Shall touch in faith its radiant hem,
And spring immortal into life.

Fling out the banner! let it float
Skyward and seaward, high and wide,

Thy Blood, O CHRIST, can cleanse me, Our glory, only in the Cross;

And make me white to-day.

Our only hope, the Crucified!

All the guilt that on us lies.

Fling out the banner! wide and high,| By His holy sacrifice
Seaward and skyward, let it shine:
Nor skill, nor might, nor merit
ours;

We conquer only in that Sign.

8, 7, 8, 7, 8, 7, 8, 7.

405.
SAVIOUR, sprinkle many nations,
Fruitful let Thy sorrows be,
By Thy pains and consolations,
Draw the Gentiles unto Thee.
Of Thy Cross the wondrous story,
Be it to the nations told;
Let them see Thee in Thy glory,
And Thy mercy manifold.

Far and wide, though all unknowing,

Pants for Thee each mortal breast; Human tears for Thee are flowing, Human hearts in Thee would rest, Thirsting, as for dews of even,

As the new-mown grass for rain, Thee they seek, as GoD of Heaven, Thee, as Man, for sinners slain.

SAVIOUR, lo, the isles are waiting, Stretched the hand, and strained the sight,

For Thy SPIRIT, new creating Love's pure flame and wisdom's light;

Give the word, and of the preacher Speed the foot, and touch the tongue,

Till on earth by every creature
Glory to the Lamb be sung.

[blocks in formation]

Tell them of the SPIRIT given
Now, to guide us up to heaven,
Strong and holy, just and true,
Working both to will and do.
Word of Life, most pure and strong,
Lo! for thee the nations long;
Spread, till from its dreary night
All the world awakes to light.
Up, the ripening fields ye see,
Mighty shall the harvest be,
But the reapers still are few,
Great the work they have to do.

Joy and strength to work for Thee,
LORD of harvest, let there be
Till the nations far and near,

See Thy light, and learn Thy fear.

407.

Amen.

6, 6, 4, 6, 6, 6, 4. THOU, Whose Almighty Word Chaos and darkness heard, And took their flight; Hear us, we humbly pray, And, where the Gospel-day Sheds not its glorious ray,

Let there be light!

Thou, Who didst come to bring
On Thy redeeming wing
Healing and light,

Health to the sick in mind,
Sight to the spirit-blind,
Oh! now to all mankind

Let there be light!
Spirit of truth and love,
Life-giving, holy Dove,

Speed forth thy flight;
Move on the waters' face,
Bearing the lamp of grace,
And in earth's darkest place
Let there be light!

Holy and Blessed Three,
Glorious TRINITY,

Wisdom, Love, Might!
Boundless as ocean's tide
Rolling in fullest pride,
Through the world, far and wide,
Let there be light! Amen.

408.

7, 6, 7, 6, 7, 6, 7, 6.

UPLIFT the blood-red banner,

Unsheathe the Spirit's sword; Put on the Christian's armour, The armour of the LORD; The helmet of salvation,

And faith, victorious shield; Go forth with acclamation,

The world your battle field. Each battle of the warrior,

Who fights by land or flood, Is with confuséd noises,

And garments rolled in blood; But this shall be with burning, From Heaven its light shall shine, Both heart and soul discerning, The fire of Love Divine.
