Whofe heart is made of tenderness,

And bowels melt with love.

8 O may thy love constrain mens hearts
To love and follow thee !

We've heard thy love has melted rocks ;
Let all fuch wonders fee.

HYMN VIII.

CHRIST's pleading above.

I UPON mount Zion's distant top
A Lamb by faith we fee:
'Tis Jefus, for we know his voice;
He calls, "Come up to me."
2 O Lamb, fee pilgrims trav'ling here,
And our foul-wants fupply;
Keep fpeaking to us by the way,
Till we come up to thee.

3 By faith we have thee bleeding feen,
Rais'd on the cross to die;

By faith we thee now pleading hear,
When lifted up on high.

4 In highest heav'ns the Lamb doth reign;
Yet as our Prieft he ftands,

And for us pleads his ftripes and wounds,
And fhews his bleeding hands.

5 As newly flain, he ftill prefents
His bleeding wounds to God,
Which plead his flock may ftill hold on,
And keep the heav'nly road.

6 In this great Advocate we truft
Who for our fins was flain;
We on his pow'rful blood depend,
Which caunot plead in vain.

7 Bleft fouls above, now with the Lamb!
You clofly him attend:

Take courage, for we tread their path,
To them we'll foon afcend.

8 Adieu, vain world, with all thy charms;
To our dear Lamb we go,

Who pleads to keep's from fin and harms,
From enemies below.

9 Hofanna to king David's Son,

And to king David's Lord;

King David's root and offspring's one
Who heav'n to men reftor'd.

HYMN IX.

HEAVEN begun on EARTH.

1 OUR Lamb's God-man, in perfon one,
The great Immannel:

This union ftrange is God's device
To fave our fouls from hell.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, Amen.

2 The Lamb is worthy for to reign,
Both faints and angels cry;

Let heav'n and earth, with all their hofts,
Adore thy majefty.
Hallelujah, &c.

3 With thefe to praife we do prefume,
As ranfom'd by thy blood:

Reign here, and in the world to cómé,
Thou everlasting God.
Hallelujah, &c.

4 We praife thee, Son of God, whose pow'r
Did bring about our peace;

We praife thee, Son of man, whose blood
Redeem'd our fallen race.

[blocks in formation]

5 Incarnate God, our Lord, our Love.
Our Lamb, our Sacrifice!

We'll thee adore, though hell fhould roar,
And worldlings thee defpife.
Hallelujah, &c.

6 Worthy of glory is the Lamb,
Who was at Calv'ry flain:
For he gave up himself to death,
To ranfom fallen men.
Hallelujah, &c

7

Be pow'r and glory ever thine,

Thy name be still ador'd;

Let all the creatures thee proclaim
Their everlafting Lord.

Hallelujah, &c.

8 Let ev'ry nation, land and tongue

Thy wondrous love confefs;

Caufe

Caufe all men know thy charming name,
"The Lord our Righteousness."
Hallelujah, &c.

9 Now, great Immanuel, to thy name
Be endless glory giv'n :
Our broken hymns on earth begun,
Them perfect make in heav'n.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, Amen.

HYMN X.

HEAVEN'S HAPPINESS.

I 'TIS heaven on earth, Chrift's love to tafte,
And feel his pow'rful grace;
'Tis heav'n begun to dwell in love,
And fee his glorious face.

Hallelujab, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, Amen.

2 Lord, in my breast the fire doth burn
Of love which thou haft giv'n :
Nothing on earth can quench this flame,
Nothing but Chrift in heav'n
Hallelujah, &c.

3. Men here would know the things below;
But I determin'd am

Christ crucify'd alone to know,
My facrificed Lamb.
Hallelujah, &c.

4 The sweetest days we have on earth
Are in thy service spent :

The comforts I enjoy in thefe

Do yield me most content.
Hallelujah, &c..

5 Communion Sabbaths here are sweet;
But them we foon do spend :

In heav'n the Sabbath fweeter is,
Which never hath an end.

[merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors]

As oft we find below.
Hallelujah, &c.

7 O happy these who fhall afcend
Where they ftill Sabbath keep,
Where in the heav'nly work of praise
They flumber not nor fleep!
Hallelujah, &c.

8 There to the Lamb that once was dead,
But now doth live again,
With joy and wonder do they fing:
He's faints eternal gain.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
Hallelujah, Amen.

HYMN XI.

The LORD our RIGHTEOUSNESS.

I WE from our free-will and our works
No help at all can draw;
For our free-will and nat'ral powers
Are haters of God's law.

2 The ftream which from Chrift's pierced fide
In blood and water flow'd,

Muft justify and cleanfe our fouls,

Ere we can live with God.

3 Lord, all my doings and my works
Can ne'er with God prevail :
Both I and they, for fin, deferve
To be thrown down to hell.

4 My righteoufnefs is filthy rags,
I humbly must confefs:

But, Lord, I plead my Saviour's name,
The Lord our Righteoufnefs.'

5 Tho' I could weep a flocd of tears,
I'd lay no ftrefs thereon:

Christ's blood muit wash me and my tears,
Or else I am undone.

6 Chrift bears the burden of our fins,

7

And of our duties too:

His blood muft cleanse our pray'rs and praife

And all that we can do.

Chrift, who's our Righteoufnefs perfumes
Our duties unto God:.

Weak

Weak mints, thro' Chrift, he doth accept;
They're fprinkled with his blood.

8 Chrift's works and wounds alone I truft,
His life and death I blefs:

I'll ever fing his precious name,
"The Lord our Righteoufnefs."

HYMN XII.

The GOSPEL-PASSOVER.

IN this our Gofpel-paffover

God fets before our eyes
The fubftance of the ancient types,
God's Lamb our facrifice.

2 Here view his body broke, and blood
Down ftreaming from his heart,

[ocr errors]

To fave our fouls: and thus our Lamb

Fulfill'd the Saviour's part.

3 Here divine Wisdom doth provide
A free foul-ftrengthning feaft;
And freely bids each hungry foul,
O come and be à gueft.

4 Here things of fenfe, but there's far more
Than hallow'd bread and wine;

Lo! there is here immortal cheer,
And ftreams of life divine.

5 Here's for our fouls Chrift's body broke,
To feed and make them grow;

Here's running ftreams of divine blood,
To make us white as fnow..

6 Lord, grant thy prefence with thy guests
Thy peace to them afford;

No mufic can delight our hearts
Like thy forgiving word.
Grant faith to eat the bread of life
Which God fent down from heav'n,
And alfo faith to drink the blood
For our redemption giv'n.

8 Awake, repentance, faith and love,
Come feaft on Chrift, and fing:
Rouze up, my pow'rs and graces all;
Attend this mighty King.

9 View here the wounds and dying pangs

Of our dear bleeding Lord,
