22 HARK! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King,
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled.

2 Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With the angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

3 Christ, by highest heaven adored,-
Christ, the everlasting Lord,—
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a Virgin's womb.

4 Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
Hail the incarnate Deity,

Pleas'd as man with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!

5 Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace;
Hail the Sun of Righteousness;
Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in his wings.

6 Lo! He lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die;
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.

20 HARK, a chorus in the skies,

Rise, my soul, exulting rise;

Come, behold in Bethlehem,

Him whom heaven's high hosts proclaim.

2 Hail'd in their supreme abode,
"Very God of very God;'

[ocr errors]

Light of light, his wond'rous name,
Ye, the sons of light, proclaim:

3 Ransom'd sinners swell the song
Of the bright celestial throng;
His, the honor'd saving name;
His, let earth and heav'n proclaim.

21 To us, to us, a child is born;

Arise, and hail the glorious morn;
To us, to us a Son is given;
Praise ye, O praise the God of heav'n.

2 O sing, ye saints, his matchless love,
Who brought salvation from above;
The virgin's son, the Prince of Peace,
Whose kingdom ever shall increase.

3 With angels let our souls adore
The virgin's son, the God of pow'r:
Let heav'n with hallelujahs ring,
While we adore our new-born King.

22 HARK! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King,
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled.

2 Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With the angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

3 Christ, by highest heaven adored,-
Christ, the everlasting Lord,-
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a Virgin's womb.

4 Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;

Pleas'd as man with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!

5 Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace;
Hail the Sun of Righteousness;

Risen with healing in his wings.

23 IN heav'n the rapturous song began,
And sweet seraphic fire

Through all the shining legions ran,
And swept each sounding lyre.

2 The theme, the song, the joy, was new
To each angelic tongue :

Swift through the realms of light it flew,
And loud the echo rung.

3 Down through the portals of the sky,
The pealing anthem ran;
And angels flew, with eager joy,

To bear the news to man.

4 Hark! through the heaven is heard their shout, Glory to God" the song;

66

Peace and salvation swell the note
Of all the heavenly throng.

5 With joy the chorus we repeat-
Glory to God on high!

66

Goodwill and peace are now complete-
Jesus is born to die."

6 Hail! Prince of Life! for ever hail!
Redeemer! Brother! Friend!

Though life, and earth, and time, must fail,
Thy praise shall never end.

24 SONGS of praise the angels sang, Heaven with Hallelujahs rang,

When Jehovah's work begun,

When He spake, and it was done.

2 Songs of praise awoke the morn,
When the Prince of Peace was born;
Songs of praise arose, when He
Captive led captivity.

3 Heaven and earth must pass away,
Songs of praise will crown that day;
God will make new heavens and earth,
Songs of praise shall hail their birth.
4 Saints below, with heart and voice,
Still in songs of praise rejoice;
Learning here, by faith and love,
Songs of praise to sing above.

5 Borne upon the latest breath,
Songs of praise shall conquer death;
Then, amidst eternal joy,

Songs of praise their powers employ.

25 HIGH let us swell our tuneful notes ; And join th' angelic throng;

For angels no such love have known,
To wake a cheerful song.

2 Good-will to sinful men is shown,
And peace on earth is given;
For, lo, th' incarnate Saviour comes
With messages from heaven.

3 Glory to God in highest strains,
In highest worlds be paid;
His glory by our lips proclaim'd,
And by our lives display'd.
