HYMN

16. [Athlone. L. M. PRIMITIVE CHRISTIANITY. Part the First.

HAPPY fouls that orfer cleav'd;

APPY the fouls that firft believ'd,

Join'd by the Unction from above,
In myftic fellowship of love.

2 Meek, fimple followers of the Lamb,
They liv'd, and spake, and thought the fame;
They joyfully confpir'd, to raife
Their ceafelefs facrifice of praife.
3 With grace abundantly endu'd,
A pure, believing multitude;"
They all were of one heart and foul,
And only love infpir'd the whole.
4 O what an age of golden days!
O what a choice, peculiar race!

[ocr errors]

Wash'd in the Lamb's all-cleaning blood,
Anointed Kings and Priefts to God!

5 Where fhall I wander now to find
The fucceffors they left behind?
The faithful, whom I seek in vain,
Are 'minish'd from the fons of men.
6 Ye different fects, who all declare,
"Lo, here is. Chrift, or Chrift is there!"
Your ftronger proofs divinely give,
And fhew me where the Chriftians live?
7 Your claim, alas! ye cannot prove;
Ye want the genuine mark of love.
Thou only, Lord, thine own canft show,
For fure thou haft a church below.
8 The gates of hell cannot prevail;
The church on earth can never fail;

Ah, join me to thy fecret ones! Ah, gather all thy living ftones! Scatter'd o'er all the earth they lie, Till thou collect them with thine eye! Draw by the mufic of thy Name, And charm into a beauteous frame. 10 For this the pleading Spirit groans, And cries in all thy banish'd ones: Greateft of gifts, thy love impart, And make us of one mind and heart. 11 Join every foul that looks to thee, In bonds of perfect charity:

1

Now, Lord, the glorious fulness give,
And all in all for ever live.

HYMN 17. [Angels Song. L. M.

Part the Second.

ESUS, from whom all bleffings flow,
Great Builder of thy Church below,
If now thy Spirit moves my breaft,
Hear, and fulfil thine own requeft!!
The few that truly call thee Lord,
And wait thy fanctifying word;
And thee their utmoft Saviour own,
Unite, and perfect them, in one.
3 O let them all thy mind exprefs,
Stand forth thy chofen witneffes
Thy power unto falvation show,
And perfect holiness below.

4 In them let all mankind behold,
How Chriftians liv'd in days of old;
Mighty their envious foes to move,
A proverb of reproach--and love..

5 Call them into thy wondrous light, Worthy to walk with thee in white! Make up thy jewels, Lord, and fhow Thy glorious,. fpotlefs church below! From every finful wrinkle free, Redeem'd from all iniquity,

The fellowship of faints make known,
And, O my God, might I be one!
7 O might my lot be caft with thefe;
The leaft of Jefu's witneffes !

O that my Lord wou'd count me meet,
To wash his dear disciples feet.
This only thing do I require:

Thou know'ft 'tis all my heart's defire,
Freely what I receive to give,
The fervant of thy church to live.

9 After my lowly Lord to go,

1

And wait upon thy faints below; Enjoy the grace to angels given, And serve the royal heirs of heaven. 10 Lord, if I now thy drawings feel, And ask according to thy will; Confirm the prayer, the feal impart, And fpeak the anfwer to my heart, 11 Tell me, or thou shalt never go, "Thy prayer is heard; it shall be fo The word hath pafs'd thy lips, and I Shall with thy people live, and die. HYMN 18. [Amfterdam. 7's & 6's. 1 MAKER, Saviour of mankind,

Who haft on me beftow'di

To be the house of GoD:

Come, and now refide in me,

Never, never to remove :

Make me juft, and good, like thee,
And full of power, and love.
Bid me in thy image rife,

A faint, a creature new;
True, and merciful, and wife,
And pure, and happy too:
This thy primitive design,
That I fhou'd in thee be bleft;
Should, within the arms divine,
For ever, ever reft.

Let thy will on me be done;
Fulfil my heart's defire,
Thee to know, and love alone;
And rife in raptures higher.
Thee, defcending on a cloud,
Till with ravish'd eyes I fee:
Then I fhall be fill'd with GoD
To all eternity!

HYMN 19. [Tallis. All 10's.

EJOICE evermore, With angels above, In Jesus's power, In Jefus's love; With glad exultation, Your triumph proclaim Afcribing falvation To God and the Lamb. 2 Thou, Lord, our relief In trouble haft been ; Haft fav'd us from grief, Haft fav'd us from fin; The power of thy Spirit, Hath fet our hearts

free,

And now we inherit All fulness in thee.

3 All fulness of peace, All fulness of joy,
And spiritual blifs, That never shall cloy;
To us it is given, In Jefus to know
A kingdom of heaven, A heaven below.

4 No longer we join, While finners invite,
Nor envy the fwine Their brutish delight;
Their joy is all fadnefs, Their mirth is all vain,
Their laughter is madness, Their pleasure is pain.
50 might they at last With forrow returns
The pleasures to tafte, For which they were born;
Our Jefus receiving, Our happiness prove,
The joy of believing, The heaven of love.
