MASS. INTROIT. Exech. 36.

When I shall be acknowledged the Holy one amongst you, I will gather you from all parts of the world; and I will pour upon you clean water, and you shall be cleansed from all your stains: and I will give you a new spirit. Alleluia, Alleluia. Ps. 33. I will for ever bless the Lord: his praise shall be always in my mouth. V. Glory.

The INTROIT is only said at Private Masses, when the PROPHECIES, &c. have been omitted. But if the Prophecies, &c. have been sung, the Kyrie eleison is also solemnly sung, while the Priest and his Ministers are coming to the altar: and the bell is rung during the Gloria in excelsis, as on holy Saturday.

COLLECT. Præsta, quæsumus. Grant, we beseech thee, O Almighty God, that the rays of thy brightness may shine upon us; and that the light of thy light may, by the power of thy Holy Spirit, strengthen the hearts of those, who have been born again by thy grace. Thro'in the unity of the same.

LESSON. Acts xix. 1. 8.

N those days: It came to pass, while Apollo was at . Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper countries, came to Ephesus: and finding there certain disciples, he said to them: Have you received the Holy Ghost, since you believed? And they said to him: We have not so much as heard if there be a Holy Ghost. And he said: How then were you baptized? And they said: With the baptism of John. Then Paul said: John baptized the people with the baptism of pennance, telling them, they were to believe in him, who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus. Having heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spoke new tongues, and prophesied. And they were altogether about twelve men. And he went into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for the space of three months, disputing with them, and exhorting them concerning the kingdom of God.

Alleluia. V. Praise the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

GOSPEL. John xiv. 15. 21.

T that time, Jesus said to his disciples: If you love me, keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, to abide with you for ever, the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither doth it know him. But you shall know him; because he shall abide with you, and be in you. I will not leave you orphans: I will come to you again. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more. see me, because I live, and you shall also live. day you shall know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me. And he that loveth me, shall be loved by my Father: and I will love him, and make myself known to him.

WHITSUNDAY.

INSTRUCTION.

HIS Sunday took its name, among our English an

day at Mass in the white garments, they received at the Font yesterday. The general Ecclesiastical name of it is Pentecost, which signifies the fiftieth, because the mystery we celebrate this day was accomplished the fiftieth day after the Resurection of Christ. The object of this solemnity, therefore is the descent of the Holy Ghost upon the Apostles, and the establishment of the new law; and consequently this is to be the object of our worship and gratitude this day. The Holy Ghost, indeed, will not descend upon us in a visible manner, as he did on the Apostles; but he will make himself felt inwardly in the hearts of such, as he shall find by grace prepared to receive him. The Holy Ghost is moreover in a particular manner communicated to us by the sacrament of confirmation. If we have already received this sacrament, let us not fail to give God thanks, and see if the conduct of our lives correspond to the quality of perfect. Christians, which we received in that sacrament. If we have not received it; let us begin to prepare for it this day, that we may receive it as soon as possible: and endeavour to procure the same happiness for those under our

care.

WH

LESSON. Acts. ii. 1. 11.

:

THEN the days of Pentecost were fulfilled, all the disciples were assembled together in one place; and on a sudden there came from heaven a noise, as it were of a strong rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. * And there appeared to them cloven tongues, as it were, of fire, and sat upon each of them and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak divers tongues, as the Holy Ghost enabled them to speak. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem some Jews, devout and religious men, from every nation under the heavens. And when this was noised abroad, the multitude gathered together, and were astonished in mind, because every one heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed, and wondered, saying: Behold are not all these men that speak to us, Galileans? And how then have we heard every one of us the tongue in which we were born? Parthians and Medians, and Elamites, and inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphilia, Egypt and the parts of Lybia about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews also, and Proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we have heard them speak in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.

Alleluia, Alleluia. V. Send forth thy spirit, and they shall be created, and thou wilt renew the face of the earth. Alleluia.

V. + Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful, and kindle in them the fire of thy love.

Alleluia, Alleluia. V. Ps. 103. Emitte spiritum tuum et creabuntur, et renovabis faciem terræ. Alleluia.

V. Veni, Sancte Spiritus, reple tuorum corda fidelium, et tui amoris in eis ignem accende.
