And behind the second veil was the tabernacle called the Holy of Holies, having the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid on every side with gold, in which was the golden urn containing the Manna, and Aaron's rod, which blossomed, and the tables of the covenant. And over it were the Cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercyseat; concerning which it is not needful to speak now particularly. Now these things being thus ordered; the priests always went into the first tabernacle indeed to perform the ministry of the sacrifices; but into the second the high priest alone went once a year, not without blood, which he offereth for his own sins of ignorance, and those of the people: the Holy Ghost signifying this, That the way into the Holy of Holies was not as yet laid open, whilst the former tabernacle was still standing. Which is a parable of the time still present; according to which gifts and sacrifices are offered, which are not capable to make him perfect, as to conscience, who serveth only in meats, and in drinks, and divers washings, and righteousnesses of the flesh, imposed till the time of amendment. But Christ being come, the high-priest of the good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is, not of this creation; neither by the blood of goats or of calves, but by his own blood, entered once into the Holy of Holies, having purchased an eternal redemption. And the ruler of the synagogue being angry that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath, speaking, said to the multitude: There are six days wherein you ought to work; in them therefore come, and be healed; and not on the Sabbath-day. And the Lord answering him, said: Ye hypocrites, doth not every one of you loose his ox or ass from the manger on the Sabbathday, and lead them to water? And ought not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath-day?
