Great God! through whom the weak are strong,

The simple wise, the trampled free, Thy temple gates to-day we throng,

To raise our grateful hymns to Thee.

4 Yet, Lord, though slavery's chain is rent The baser thrall of sin remains;

And many a knee to her is bent,
And willing millions wear her chains.

O be her cruel bondage riven,

And our Redeemer's reign succeed; Thus grant us, Lord, the peace of heaven And let our land be "free indeed."

HYMN 131.-L. M.

O preach my Gospel, saith the Lord,

G Bid the world my grace receive,

He shall be sav'd that trusts my word; He shall be damn'd that wont believe,

2 I'll make your great commission knowa
And ye shall prove my Gospel true,
By all the works that I have done,
By all the wonders ye shall do.

[ocr errors]

Teach all the nations my commands;

"I'm with you till the world shall end,

All pow'r is trusted in my hands,

I can destroy, and 1 defend."

HYMN 135-L. M.

ESUS shall reign where'er the sun,

JDoes his successive journeys run;
His kingdom spreads from shore to
shore,

Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

2 From north to south the princes meet, To pay their homage at his feet; While western empires own their Lord And savage tribes attend his word.

3 To him shall endless pray'r be made, And endless praises crown his head; His name like sweet perfume shall rise With ev'ry morning sacrifice.

4 People and realms of ev'ry tongue, Dwell on his love with sweetest song, And infant voices shal! proclaim, Their early blessings on his name.

HYMN 136.-C. M.

HEPHERDS rejoice, lift up your eyes Sand send your fears away,

News from the regions of the skies-
A Saviour's born to-day.

"Jesus, the God whom angels fear,
Comes down to dwell with you;
To day he makes his entrance here,
But not as monarchs do.

3 "No gold, nor swaddling bands,
Nor royal shining things;
A manger for his cradle stands,
And holds the King of Kings.

"Go shepherds, where the infant lies,
And see his humble throne;
With tears of joy in all your eyes
Go, shepherds, kiss the Son."

5 Thus Gábriel sang, and stright around The heav'nly armies throng;

They tune their harps to lofty sound
And thus eonclude the song.

5 "Glory to God that reigns above,
Let peace surround the earth;

Mortals shall know their Maker's love,
At their Redeemer's birth."

7 Lord! and shall angels have their song,
And men no tunes to raise?
O may we lose these useless tongues
When we forget to praise !

8 Glory to God that reigns above,
That pity'd us forlorn;

We join to sing our Maker's love,
For there's a Saviour born.

WHIL

HYMN 137.-C. M.

HILE shepherds watch'd ther flocks by night,

All seated on the ground,

The angel of the Lord came down,
And glory shone around.

2 "Fear not," said he (for mighty dread
Had seiz'd their troubled mind;)
"Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind.

"To you in David's town, this đay, Is born of David's line,

The Saviour who is Christ the Lord; And this shall be the sign.

4 “The heavenly babe you there shall

find

To human view display'd,

All meanly wrapp'd in swathing bands And in a manger laid."

Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith
Appear'd a shining throng

Of angels praising God on high,
And thus address'd their song.

"All glory be to God on high, And to the earth be peace; Good-will henceforth from heav'n ta

men,

Begiu and never cease.”

HYMN 138.-C. M.

NCE more my soul the rising day
Salutes thy waking eyes;

Once more my veice, thy tribute pay
To Him that rules the skies.
